Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins Items of interest from the pages of The Chieftain from this week in years past 100 YEARS AGO JANUARY 18, 1917 • Two Enterprise lodges, the I.O.O.F. and the Knights of Pythias, are making plans to build homes for their own use during the coming sea- son. The Odd Fellows … bought of Mrs. Emily Wilson 42 feet of ground fronting on Main street, at the southwest corner of West Third, or De- pot street, paying $550. • Drawings and plans for the proposed new Enterprise school building arrived this week. The plans call for a striking and handsome 2-sto- ry structure, with exterior of white brick and ornamental white columns rising on the front face. Preliminary state- ments … will represent an outlay of around $75,000. • Eighteen elk calves will be shipped shortly from the band in the government pas- ture beyond the Chesnimus. Two will be shipped to a park at Bend; two to the state fairgrounds at Salem; and the other four- teen to Crater Lake National Park. • A new grain warehouse, 48 by 150 feet, is being built at the railroad station at Los- tine by Gotter Brothers for the Elgin Forwarding com- pany. (Poley) Beaudoin and Hattie Beaudoin sold their place on upper Prairie Creek last week to M.B. Blamires and Brooks Galloway. The contract of sale specifies a consideration of $121,300. • In 1946, 35 divorce ac- tions were filed in Wallowa County. Of this number, 26 were granted, 3 dismissed and 6 were still pending. 50 marriage licenses were is- sued during the year. 50 YEARS AGO JANUARY 19, 1967 • Kathleen Kooch and Gary Price have been se- lected by the Elks Lodge as the winners in a Wallowa County “Youth Leadership Contest”. • Judy Ingersoll, by fin- ishing first in a written homemaking knowledge and attitude examination for se- nior girls, became Wallowa High School’s 1967 Betty Crocker Homemaker of To- morrow. • Larry Sandlin dumped in a free throw with nine seconds left to break a 38- 38 tie as Joseph edged Elgin, 39-38, in a thrilling Tu-Val- ley League conference hoop battle last Saturday. • Purchase of the McLean Theater building in Wal- lowa was authorized by the Wallowa Grange on Friday evening and work will begin soon to convert the building into a modern hall for the Wallowa Grange. • Enterprise city coun- cil held a special meeting Monday evening. The street committee discussed the possibility of purchasing a street sweeper. Weather per- mitting, Bud Stangel was to fly Dawson Neil and Mel Barber to Spokane to look at sweepers. 25 YEARS AGO JANUARY 16, 1992 • Citizens opposed to the proposed Joseph Point subdivision at the foot of Wallowa Lake this week announced that they will go to the voters in an attempt to overturn a Dec. 26 deci- sion by the Wallowa County Court to approve the project. • Three Wallowa Coun- ty wrestlers emerged as champions in their respec- tive weight classes at the 16-team JoHi Invitational Tournament last weekend. The three were Tom Rosette of Wallowa, Chad Nash of Enterprise, and Joel Steele of Wallowa. • Navy Seaman Lau- ra Packard, daughter of John and Thelma Roberts of Enterprise, recently re- turned from an unsched- uled 5-month Persian Gulf deployment in support of continuing Desert Storm operations.
