Wallowa County Chieftain Community wallowa.com Fire damages Hurricane Creek home By Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain A quick response from Jo- seph and Enterprise fi re de- partments to a reported fl ue fi re Wednesday morning like- ly prevented catastrophe at a home on Hurricane Creek Road. No injuries were reported. The initial dispatch call reporting a fl ue fi re went to Joseph Fire at 9:06 a.m. The department was on the way to the scene when fi re chief Jeff Wecks said he received a call that smoke was pouring from the attic at the home of Gene and Sharon Martin at 62789 Hurricane Creek. At that time, Wecks called on Enterprise Fire for assistance and had the sheriff’s department close the road. The county road depart- ment also plowed and grav- eled the road for emergency vehicles. Smoke and steam poured from an attic vent as fi refi ght- ers, some wearing oxygen tanks, pulled the ceiling down to get to the attic and also tore off exterior siding because the fi re had spread from the fi re- place backing into the wall. Some fi refi ghters came from the home carrying canvas tarps fi lled with smoldering insula- tion and bits of ceiling while others carried out furniture. Wecks thought the crew had a handle on the fi re by 10:30 a.m. “We’re trying to cover ev- erything to minimize the rest of the damage,” he said. Fire- fi ghters had mopped up and left the scene by 12:30 p.m. No injuries were reported, and Wecks said fi re damage was limited to the fi replace wall and the upstairs living room and ceiling. A group of Wallowa County citizens have announced that a “sister march” in support of the Women’s March on Washington will take place Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. in Joseph. Those inter- ested in being part of the march are asked to meet in the Joseph public parking area at the junc- tion of Imnaha Highway and North Lake Street. As of Tuesday, the Women’s March organization reported Wallowa County that 616 marches around the world had been registered as “sister marches.” Sister March- es are not offi cially or legally associated with the Women’s March organization. They are a grassroots movement that has sprung up in support of the Washington, D.C., March. Marches are also planned for Pendleton, Bend and other Oregon cities. Many individuals, both at marches and at home, will be wearing pink knit hats in a show of solidarity with the Women’s March. The Pussyhat Project was or- ganized by Krista Suh and Jay- na Zweiman of Los Angeles, as a way for individuals who could not attend the marches to show their solidarity.
