A8 WEDNESDAY December 21, 2016 WRESTLING EAGLES GUN DOWN OUTLAWS, 48-37 Enterprise, Joseph fare well in Elgin meet By Stephen Tool Wallowa County Chieftain Steve Tool/Chieftain Caevan Murray of Joseph goes up for two during the Eagles 47-42 loss to Powder Valley on Dec. 17. By Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain T he Joseph High School Eagles cruised to a 48-37 home victory over Enterprise High School in a Dec. 12 boys varsity basketball game. The Eagles jumped on the visitors from five miles down the road, scoring the first 13 points of the game. Enterprise scored its first points of the game with three minutes left in the first quarter, making it 13-2. Joseph led 20-10 at the end of the first quarter before Enterprise went on a small run to close to within single digits. But that’s as close as they got in a very physical game that saw 34 fouls. Joseph’s stout, zone defense proved diffi- cult for the Outlaws to figure out. Enterprise scored many of their points on foul shots or offensive rebounds. “Each year we always get better, and it’s good to have these games to show us where we need to be at and what we need to do,” said Joseph coach Olan Fulfer. Yet he still saw ways to improve and stay focused on the task at hand “When we get in front early like that, we can start playing flat,” Fulfer said. “That’s what happened with Heppner, and it came back to bite us (After jumping out to a 19-5 lead, the Eagles lost 55-54 in the closing seconds).” He added that his team needed to concentrate more on crashing the offensive boards. Fulfer also congratulated Enterprise for their tenacity, noting that Enterprise fought hard and kept pushing the Eagles. “They didn’t make it easy on us, and we need to learn from it,” he said. Aaron Borgerding led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Cayden DeLury with 12 points and Jake Chrisman contributing 9 to the Eagles’ cause. Stats were unavailable for the Outlaws. Both Joseph and Enterprise wrestling teams headed over the hill to Elgin to participate in the John Rhysdam Memo- rial Invitational meet Dec. 16-17. Eleven teams competed at the event. Steven Beckman of Joseph won the 106-pound class with a convincing win by fall over Kennisen Knifong of Enterprise, while Shane Lund of Enterprise won the 113-pound class with an 8-4 decision over Alejandro Duran-Puente of Baker/Pow- der Valley. Rylie Warnock of Joseph won the 182-pound category. Outlaws coach Troy Farwell said near- ly everyone on the team came away with a win over the weekend. “It was good having bigger schools like La Grande and Baker there for some of my tougher kids, but it was a little tough on my younger kids,” he said. He added that seeing all but two of the teams in his district competed, which gave his wrestlers a heads-up on upcoming com- petition. Cole Farwell placed second at 126 pounds, even when wrestling Jace Hays of Baker/Powder Valley, a 4A school. “Those are the kinds of matches my tougher kids need, they need to be pushed,” Farwell said. Final results for local wrestlers who finished top three: 106 pounds — Steven Beckman, Joseph, first; 113 pounds — Kennisen Knifong, Enterprise, second; 126 pounds — Shane Lund, Enterprise, first; Cole Farwell, Enterprise, second; 182 pounds Rylie Warnock, Joseph, first; 195 pounds — Gavin Balwin, Joseph, third. The team had been sched- uled for a round of games over two days at the Pilot Rock Tournament outside of Pendleton, but nasty road conditions and a closed inter- state kept the team from trav- eling Friday. But the skies parted Sat- urday, and the bus from En- terprise was able to make the trip. The team’s reward: A 51-28 thumping of 4A Mc- Loughlin. The outcome was never in doubt. Enterprise umped out to a 15-5 lead after the first quarter and coasted thereaf- ter. Sarah Aschenbrenner led the way with 12 points off the bench, going 5-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw stripe.
