FFA, Les Schwab team up for local food drive Wallowa County Chieftain The Enterprise FFA Chap- ter and Enterprise Les Schwab Center have teamed up to launch a local food drive to help meet the needs of our community. The local drive is part of a statewide initiative sponsored by FFA and Les Schwab. To participate, you can pick up paper food bags at the front desk at the Les Schwab Center, 802 NW 1st St. in Enterprise and return the bag fi lled with your donation on non-perishable items by Oct. 31. A limited number of bags also are available at the offi ces of The Chieftain, 209 NW 1st St. in Enterprise. The initiative is part of the FFA’s core purpose of “Liv- ing to Serve,” part of the FFA motto “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live and Living to Serve.” Les Schwab Tire Centers partnered with the Oregon FFA in 2011, when state budget cuts threatened FFA’s survival in Oregon. Since the recession of 2008, the Oregon Food Bank has seen a 41 percent increase in the need for food box dis- tribution. According to a FFA press release, an average of 270,000 people receive meals each month from the food bank and 92,000 of those are children. William Dennis Parks Feb. 15, 1943 to Sept. 25, 2016 Florence Power Dec. 9, 1948 to Oct. 12, 2016 William Dennis Parks of Joseph passed away peacefully at Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande on Sept. 25, 2016 at age 73. Denny was born Feb. 15, 1943 to Bill and Maxine Parks in Ma- con, Ga. When he was in the third grade, his family moved from Georgia to Joseph, where he graduated high school in 1961. His academic achievements from Joseph High School are highlighted by an ap- pointment to Boys State Representative and as a recipient of the American Legion Citizenship Award. After high school graduation, Denny moved to Redding, Ca- lif., and began pre-dental studies at Shasta College. He eventually earned a degree in mortuary science from the San Francisco Col- lege of Mortuary Science. He then took his knowledge of the hu- man body and began training in makeup artistry under the tutelage of Hollywood’s most famous, the brothers Monty, Bud and Wally Westmore. The Westmores were part of a legendary family dynasty that dominated the fi eld of makeup artistry in Hollywood cinema. After training under the Westmores, Denny came home to Jo- seph for a visit. During his visit home, he met Italian model Michel Montelbano, whose image during the late 1960s and early 1970s has been viewed in magazines the world round. It was through his association with Montelbano that he started his show business ca- reer in Hollywood, Fla. He began as the makeup artist for Jackie Gleason in the Florida studio, and in addition to the big man himself, Parks also did make- up for the guest stars appearing on Gleason’s variety show. Some of the most notable to sit in his makeup chair were John Wayne, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Rock Hudson, Robert Young, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Red Skelton and Bette Da- vis along with those from the modern generation including River Phoenix, John Candy, Billy Idol, Ricky Nelson, Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand. As a mortician, he prepared the bodies of some of the most well-known celebrities, using the delicate hand of a surgeon and the loving, sensitive touch of an artist. His work in mortuary embalming and makeup, like his work with the living, reads like a who’s who of American pop culture and U.S. politics. Denny was the last to touch the bodies of Ronald Reagan, Nicole Simpson Brown of the notorious OJ Simpson case, Kim Novak, Bill Lear (inventor of the Lear Jet), Benjamin Cush- man of Cushman Scooters, Irene Ryan and he was called in for his artistry to restore the beauty of Jayne Mansfi eld so admirers could have a fi nal gaze of her as she was laid to rest. Denny is survived by his mother, Maxine Parks-Thiessen of Joseph, brothers David Parks of Joseph and Don Parks of Sum- merville and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Parks. The family will schedule a celebration of life for next spring or summer. Loveland Funeral Chapel of La Grande is handling ar- rangements. Flo never passed up a good water fi ght and often was the in- stigator. Her favorite pastime was reading and rocking by the fi re where she could see her mountains that she returned to in 1992.
