SLOW START SINKS OUTLAWS Enterprise battles back from early 19-point deficit By Scot Heisel Wallowa County Chieftain T hings can start to seem pretty bleak when you’re trailing 19-0 midway through the second quarter on Homecoming Night. That’s where the Enterprise Outlaws found themselves against Union on Friday on the Volleyball Wallowa at Joseph, 6 p.m. 1A District play-in FRIDAY, OCT. 21 Volleyball 1A District Tournament at EOU in La Grande 2A District Tournament at EOU in La Grande Football Enterprise vs. Grant Union, 7 p.m. Joseph @ Pine Eagle, 2 p.m. Wallowa @ Powder Valley, 7 p.m. SATURDAY, OCT. 22 home turf. Quitting wasn’t an option, however, and the home team fought for the win before coming up just short in a 31-29 loss in their league opener. Union (3-2, 1-0) scored on each of its fi rst three possessions with a nice mix of misdirection running, power running and timely pass plays. Despite the lopsided score, Joseph re- mained in the game through- out the entire fi rst half. Both teams offenses stalled early, although the Cougars closed out the fi rst quarter with a score on a 55- yard touchdown run. The Enterprise seniors made their fi nal stand Friday — on their home court, at least. The Outlaws (7-13, 2-6) wrapped up regular-season play with a 3-1 loss to Union (13-4, 4-4) on Friday. Enterprise came out swing- ing in the fi nal home match for seniors Gwen Jenson, Tiffanie George, Sarah Aschenbrenner and Darby Gassett. The fi rst game went back and forth, with neither team leading by more than two points until the Outlaws edged ahead to 12-9 with soph- omore Shelby Moncrief serving. They ultimately stretched that lead to 22-16, when Moncrief again took serve. Jensen found room for a soft kill and Junior Riley Gray sealed the 25-16 win with a block. Eagles stumble against Echo in second half By Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain The Echo Cougars spoiled the Joseph Eagles’ homecoming game, walking away from the fi eld of battle with a 52-28 win. Turnovers, penalties and an inability to read the option play on defense led to the Scot Heisel/Chieftain The Outlaws gather for a pre-game chant prior to facing Union at home on Friday. PREP ROUNDUP Echo volleyball edges Joseph in fi ve-game thriller Wallowa County Chieftain The Joseph volleyball team notched two more wins last weekend and head into district play with some mo- mentum, but a tough, fi ve-set loss to Echo on Friday will make the road to state just a bit tougher. Haven Johnson led Joseph (18-5, 11-3) with 11 kills and Emma Hite and Ally Cooney each added eight, but the Cougars ( ) came away with a close 19-25, 25-19, 16-25, 29-27, 15-9 victory. The loss bumped Echo (22-6, 11-3) above Joseph in the league standings and forced Joseph into a district play-in game against Wallowa on Tuesday night (after The Chieftain went to press). Hite led in the team in blocks with fi ve against Echo, while Alexis Sykora had four. On Thursday, Joseph cruised past Pine Eagle 25-14, 25-5, 25-15. Sykora led in kills with six, while Hite added fi ve and Johnson had four. The Eagles fi nished their regular-season schedule with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-14 win at Cove on Saturday. Johnson recorded 16 kills in that match, while Cooney had nine and Hite had seven. See ROUNDUP, Page A14
