Bear meat supper at Alder Slope

Oct. 12, 1916
OUT OF THE PAST
• Photo: This small pic-
ture shows one of the best
known spots in the eastern
part of Wallowa county, “The
Bridge”, on the Imnaha. Two
weeks ago the old wooden
bridge was removed and a
new steel structure put in its
place.
• Registration of voters in
the county has been complet-
ed and the books in County
Clerk Zurcher’s ofice have
closed. The total number of
registered voters is 3541,
against 3320 on the books at
this time two years ago, a gain
of 221.
• A traveling salesman
took a straw vote for presi-
dent on the passenger train
coming in yesterday after-
noon. The salesman was a
republican and Aaron Wade,
who was coming in from La
Grande, checked up the re-
sults, which showed 42 votes
for Wilson and 28 for Hughes.
Democrats were so pleased
with the vote that they have
been telling it to all comers.
• Enterprise school notes:
A hot water tank has been
installed in the grade school.
The water is piped to the lava-
tories for the use of the pupils
and is also used for cleaning
purposes.
• The moving pictures tak-
en last summer of the gather-
ing at the watermelon festival
at the foot of the lake will be
shown at the People’s The-
atre, Joseph, next Monday
evening. This will be the only
opportunity for the many En-
terprise people who attend-

70 YEARS AGO
Oct. 10, 1946
• While guests at the Chief
Joseph hotel in Joseph were
sleeping peacefully Monday
night a prowler entered sev-
eral rooms and stole mon-
ey amounting to $138. The
money was taken from three
rooms. Several other rooms
were entered and ransacked
but nothing taken.
• Tragedy struck swiftly at
the F. Thomas Hurlburt home
in Enterprise Monday when
their two-year-old son was
instantly killed by a car be-
ing backed out by Mrs. Cora
Richards from the Richards
garage.
• New Ford truck owners
are Bill Fleser and Delman
Brown. Bill Platzoeder has a
new Ford coach. New Ford
tractor owners, all veterans,
are: Arthur Bay, Keith Searles
and Ernest Young.
• Alder Slope news: Bill
Heskett, Merl Chenoweth and
Louis Jordan entertained 31
of their friends at a bear meat
supper at the Johnson home
Friday night. The bear was

deputies arrested Gerritt James
Johnson, 24, of Enterprise on
Wallowa County Circuit Court
felony warrant for parole viola-
tion, original charge burglary II,
and misdemeanor warrant for
contempt of court.
4:10 p.m.: Union County
deputies arrested Bobbie Irene
Buchholz, 40, of Wallowa in
Enterprise on Wallowa County
P&P warrant for probation vio-
lation, original charge contempt
of court.
4:34 p.m.: Enterprise police
arrested Jimmy Joe Weber, 39,
of Enterprise on for P&P viola-
tion, original charge burglary II
and contempt of court. Trans-
ported to Umatilla County jail.
6:49 p.m.: Wallowa County
issued a statewide warrant for
Josh Ray Tankersly, 33, of Elgin
for contempt of court.
Thursday, Oct. 6
7:17 a.m.: Report of possible
wolf depredation in rural Joseph.
7:56 a.m.: Black/tan/red
male blood hound cross with no
shot by Mr. Johnson when he
was mowing hay for Mr. Hes-
kett on the Bob Baker place.
• Bartlett news: There was
a REA meeting at Troy Sept.
26 to see how many were
interested in having electric
service here. Speakers were
members of the Clearwater
Valley Light & Power associ-
ation of Lewiston. 59 families
signed up for the line.

Oct. 13, 1966
• The Seventh-Day Adven-
tist Church in Enterprise will
be dedicated at a special ser-
vice to be held this Saturday.
Work on the new structure
has been underway for about
three years.
• One of the projects of
the local Soroptimist Club
has been taking residents of
the Wallowa County Nursing
Home out for weekly automo-
bile rides during the summer
months. Among the drivers
serving most often: Gwen
Rahn, Rusty Ricker, Marjorie
McGraw, Dorothy Wergen,
Emily Daggett, Ruth Amoni-
no and Joy Klages.
• The total number of vot-
ers registered in Wallowa
county is down almost ten
collar or tags found on Imnaha
Highway at milepost 7.

• Persons concerned about
the loss of the historic Wal-
lowa County High School,
which was virtually destroyed
by ire Sept. 26, may ind
comfort in the announcement
this week that the landmark
building is going to be re-
built. That’s the word from
owner of the building Delbert
Deach, who plans to begin re-
construction next March.
