OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins 100 YEARS AGO July 27, 1916 • An auto delivery truck with the words “Eagle Cap Laundry” painted on the sides appeared in town yesterday, ready to start business for the new concern which will be opened here shortly. George Gilbert, proprietor of the new laundry, drove in with the car from La Grande. • Information regarding the amendment to the en- larged homestead act was sent by the land ofice a few days ago. The new law makes it possible for a homesteader who previously has proved up on 160 acres, to ile on anoth- er quarter section. It became effective July 3. • A crop of the new wheat was contracted yesterday at 80 cents by L. W. and C. A. Riley, operating as the En- terprise Grain company. This is the highest igure at which wheat has been contracted before harvest in many years. Wheat has been advancing slowly for some weeks in the world market. • W.J. Hancock is prepar- ing to run an automobile stage from Joseph to La Grande, with his seven-passenger Chalmers car. The fare will be practically the same as on the railroad. • Gravel from the E. M. & M. basement is being used at several points in town to surface or grade streets that were rough or low.
