It was her last wish to be buried with her fa- ther in the Lostine Cemetery along with many of her other Olsen relatives. This was done July 1. Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Kenneth Elwyn Powers passed away June 22, 2016, at age 93 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. He was born March 8, 1923, in Wal- lowa to Loren Tower and Rosa Emma (Bishop) Powers. He attended Lower Valley Grade School from 1929 until 1937 and graduated from Wal- lowa High School in 1941. He graduated from the Oregon In- stitute of Technology Auto Die- sel School in Portland in 1942. He moved back to work on the family farm in Lower Valley un- til its sale in 1946. He moved to Portland with his wife Jennette, whom he had married Aug. 30, 1946 in Boise. Elwyn built houses and contracted cement works with his brother Lyle until 1947. He moved on to cutting cordwood, and then purchased his fi rst logging truck. In 1949, Elwyn and Jennette moved back to Wallowa Coun- ty. In 1954 they purchased a house in Lostine. Elwyn continued to haul logs until 1976. For 13 years he hauled for Harold C. Voetberg. Elwyn drove and maintained the truck while Jennette combined bookkeeping and homemaking. Elwyn enjoyed hunting, fi shing, boating and also ventured into motorcycling. He and Ron McArtor formed a dealership for Yamaguchi and Hodaka motorcycles. In May, 1961, Elwyn and Dale Victor, a childhood friend, were the fi rst to travel a round trip on the Salmon River. In 1970, he and Jennette opened a gas station in Lostine — “Powers Cash & Save” — a business that employed many young people over the years. In 1976 they sold the station and the truck and moved to Angoon, Alaska. They worked for El- wyn’s nephew Dick Powers — Elwyn maintaining equipment and Jennette in Dick’s grocery store. Six months later, Elwyn went to work for T.O. Paddock Construction Company, trav- eling to many villages in southeastern Alaska, with Juneau as home base. In June, 1981, Elwyn traveled to Oregon for hip surgery, then returned to Juneau the next spring. He worked for Paddock until July, then was hired as chief engineer on a dredge crew with the North Slope Borough in Barrow, Alaska. Jennette re- mained in Juneau. After retiring they lived independently in Lostine until early 2014, when Elwyn developed pneumonia. He was not expect- ed to survive, but fought to live. After his discharge from the hospital, he and Jennette moved to a home near their daughter in Joseph. Elwyn and Jennette worked hard and enjoyed life, especially the outdoors, near and far. They were together for almost 70 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Rosa Pow- ers; sister Juanita Wolfe; and brothers Florian and Lyle. Survivors include wife Jennette (Renoe); children Nancy Rob- erts (husband Johnny) of Joseph, Gary Powers of Hermiston and Harold Powers of Salem; seven grandchildren; nine great-grand- children; and other cherished family members and friends. A graveside service was held July 2 at Bramlet Cemetery in the valley of Elwyn’s childhood, below his beloved mountains. His nephew Ron Renoe offi ciated, and a family friend, Gary Moffi t, sang “Red River Valley” (which Elwyn was known to chord and sing) and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Memorial donations may be made, in the name of Kenneth El- wyn Powers, to Friends of the Wallowa School District, P.O. Box 229, Wallowa, OR, 97885. About Obituaries News obituaries are a free service of the Wallowa County Chieftain. The paper accepts obituaries from the family or fu- neral home.
