Marilyn Ann Bates Johnson passed away peacefully on June 26, 2016 in Joseph at age 88. She was born Oct. 26, 1927 in Spokane to John Russell Bates and Crystal Nee Bates. Marilyn graduated from Cheney High School in 1945. Summers were spent at Fish Lake and Marilyn was a beauti- ful swimmer. She once took off from the dock alone and swam the length of the lake to a resort on the other side. Her mother, who had been looking for her, was waiting on the shore when she arrived, arms folded. She met Ronald Marion Johnson at Cheney High and they mar- ried on Aug. 31, 1947. She worked at Fairchild Air Force Base during World War II, and it was there that she met her lifelong buddy, Betty Ferrara. Cindy was born fi rst in 1952, Brian in 1955, and Julie surprised everybody in 1963. Ron and Marilyn were married until Ron died in May 1980. They lived in Cheney, Wash., until 1969, when they relocated to Bellevue, Wash. After 31 years as a homemaker, Mar- ilyn went to work for Offshore Systems, Inc. She offered years of support to the executives there and collected a whole bunch of account receivables from some pretty wild characters. Her employ- ers and co-workers loved Marilyn and she loved them. She retired once in her 70s, but not really. Their mutual admiration and contin- ued support went well into her 80s. She continued to lunch with the ladies from work up until she left Kirkland, Wash., in April 2015. At this point in her life, she came to live in Joseph. There wasn’t a day that she lived here that she wasn’t amazed by the beauty that surrounded her. She felt loved by her caregivers at Alpine House and enjoyed their sass. Her daughter Julie and husband Tony Chris- man will miss having her nearby. Marilyn is remembered and appreciated as a really great grand- ma. Kyle Johnson and Jamie Lau, Adam and Tyler Johnson, Joshua and Dustin Thompson, Anna and Joey Pierri, and Sara Chrisman all have benefi ted from her love and devotion. She is survived by children Cynthia Johnson of Kirkland, Bri- an Johnson and Jeny Pulliam of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Julie and Tony Chrisman of Enterprise. She was preceded in death by her husband Ron, brother Don- ald R. Bates, son-in-law Jim Johnson, whom she adored, Nanette Leonard, partner in crime, and granddaughter Amanda Mae John- son. At her request there will be no services. Donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in her name. She would like that. Marilyn was a lot of fun and she had many rowdy friends. We hope that you will toast her, often and fondly. Catherine (Katie) Ann Zoll- man passed away July 6 at Wal- lowa Memorial Hospital at age 64.
