Howard gondola loan falls through OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Cheryl Jenkins 100 YEARS AGO July 6, 1916 • The Joseph Herald has been sold by Major S.P. Shutt to W. C. Black, an experi- enced newspaper man from Harrisburg, Linn County, who took charge this week. • The mystery of a “stolen” automobile threw the court- house into commotion yes- terday afternoon The sheriff’s ofice telephoned all around the county seeking to get a trace of the villain who had “stolen” it, but suddenly sub- sided when the car showed up late in the day. • There were crowds upon crowds at the lake Tuesday, July 4th, and the day be- ing ideal for celebrating, all seemed to enjoy themselves to the fullest extent. Auto- mobiles came and west in swarms and droves while numerous teams and an occa- sional bicycle and pedestrian helped to swell the total num- ber of those present. Five au- tos took to the ditch Tuesday as the result of accidents and by good luck no one was in- jured. Two cars were laid up for repairs in Creighton Lane, both being Fords. • Photo caption: The school house of district 65, Fruita is strictly a home prod- uct. The trees cut down to make room for the building and grounds were sawed into lumber at a small mill nearby. 70 YEARS AGO July 11, 1946 • The price of retail bot- tled milk took another jump this week going from 14 to 16 cents a quart. This increase followed the jump in butterfat prices which went into effect when the OPA expired. • Rooms will be needed to accommodate a large number of visitors during the celebra- tion of Chief Joseph Days. A rate of $3 for a room with a double bed has been recommended. • Figures compiled by the census bureau in the Dept. of Commerce in the 1945 farm census show a decrease in the number of farms in the coun- ty from 989 in 1940 to 812 in 1945. The average size of a farm in the county increased to 831.9 acres in 1945 com- pared to 585.5 acres in 1940. • Mr. and Mrs. Andy An- derson have bought the Shake Shop at Joseph from Mrs. Helen Grandy. Mrs. Grandy bought the shop from Frank McCully and opened it in May, 1944. • Maurice Weaver, propri- etor of Weaver Hardware in Enterprise has been selected by Hardware Trade magazine to be featured as “Retailer of the Month”. He was notiied last week that a feature article would appear in the August issue of the magazine. • The Wallowa Scenic Development Corporation received word this week that their application for a loan from the Small Business Ad- ministration for the construc- tion of a gondola lift at Mount Howard has been declined. Gomes is one of the star compound bow shooters in the White Tale Legends 4-H archery club. Gomes, 14 is getting ready to enter Enterprise High School as a freshman this fall. Gomes recently competed at the club’s spring shoot at the Wallowa County Fairgrounds where he did not place a single shot outside the bullseye. During the state 4-H tournament in Shedd, Gomes qualified for the National 4-H archery team and excelled in his perform- ances in firearm competition as well. This came as a hard blow to the members of the corporation who ex- pressed some bitterness at the rejection. A spokesman men- tioned the time and expense which has been incurred in making surveys, feasibility studies and time spent on the project. • A near tragedy struck at the foot of Wallowa lake early Wednesday afternoon when Ricky Tippett, 7, Joseph, who was playing on the beach, no- ticed that the wind was blow- ing his innertube out into the lake and attempted to retrieve it. Before he knew it he was in water over his head and yelled for help. About that time Greg Roberts, 15, of Joseph, came riding down the road on his bicycle and heard the boy’s yells for help. He immediate- ly dropped his bike, plunged into the water and pulled the struggling youngster to safety. The boy appeared to be OK. • News from Imnaha: While setting traps to catch beaver which were damaging a peach orchard, Malcolm Neil with the able assistance of Ferman Warnock, caught two otter. In attempting to free them from the trap they fought viciously even after being freed, and one attacked Mr. Neil to the extent of in- licting a bite. 25 YEARS AGO July 11, 1991 • A one-vehicle holiday weekend accident on a Hur- ricane Creek curve near the Joseph airport left one local man dead and another crit- ically injured. Killed was Russell Keeney, 29, of En- terprise. Stephen Noonan, 26, Enterprise, was still list- ed in critical and unstable condition • One Wallowa County girl will be having the time of her life in neighboring Union County this weekend as half of the Elgin Stam- pede Court. Jessica Olson, 17, Enterprise, and Carmen Coe, Elgin, make up the court this year. • Photo caption: The rigors of Operation Desert Storm did little to damp- en the competitive spirit of Gary Morrison, shown here headed for the finish line at last Saturday’s Lostine River Run. Morrison, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, returned from the Mideast in April; he is currently on leave and visiting Dr. and Mrs. Lowell Euhus, the par- ents of his wife Shannon.
