Lostine River Run brings in the families By Kathleen Ellyn Wallowa County Chieftain The Lostine River Run beneited from beautiful weather to go with the beauti- ful scenery and drew a crowd of 157 runners this year — many of them kids. That’s only a few more than last year, but the crowd seemed much larger due to the number of families participat- ing with children small enough to be led by the hand, pushed in the stroller or packed on a parent’s back. The 5K run on the scenic and winding road outside of Lostine was by far the favor- ite event, with 71 entries in the running race and 14 in the walk. The 10K saw 45 runners, including 12-year-old Bayden Menton of Joseph, 13-year-old Kendra McDaniel of Boise and 16-year-old Sebastian Hobbs of Lostine. All three of those young runners took top male or female in their age division and ended up with amazing overall placings of seventh, 11th and 12th, respectively. Emily Sheahan, 42, of En- terprise again was the fastest woman in the 10K with a time of 44:37.4. Orion Davidson, 37, of Keizer was top overall male with a time of 36:25.9. Jim Cornelison, 71, of Walla Walla also ran that race, inish- ing 32nd. He ran it on his “new knee,” and he’s run the Los- tine River Run for ive years straight, he said. “I’m working on marathons in 50 states,” Cornelison said. “I’ve got six states to go if I don’t hurt myself in a 10K.” Timothy Vandervlugt, 51, of La Grande — a multiple 10K winner at Lostine — de- cided to challenge himself with the 5K this year. “It’s more dificult in a lot of ways,” Vandervlugt said, “and I plan to run a few more.” Vandervlugt, who coaches track and ield in Cove/Union, ran the 5K with students Alex Graffunder, 16, of Cove and Alisa Fox, 14, of La Grande: Graffunder won that event with a time of 16:24.0, with Vandervlugt right behind him for second place. “This is my third time at Lostine River Run,” Graf- funder said. “I tend to like the faster courses — fast and cool.” Fourteen other youths braved the shorter run. All inished, including little Lilly Weer, who turned in a time of 36:57.6. Alisa Fox, Kiah Carlson, Taylor Fox, Andrew Lackey and Brie Stumbo all took irsts in their division for the 5K. Kathleen Ellyn/Chieftain Braden, 11, and Douglas, 7, of the extended McDaniel tribe of Boise push toward the finish in the 1-mile kids race at the Lostine River Run. On the other end of the age spectrum, Maria Forsenius, 66, of Goteborg, Sweden, was the oldest female winner in the 5K run, and she also traveled the greatest distance to Lostine. The oldest male was Gary Van Arsdale, 71, of West Richland, Wash. Top 5K walkers were Lar- ry Miller, 76, of Halfway and Randi Jandt, 56, of Enterprise. The 1-mile race back at race headquarters saw 27 start- ers, with top youth honors go- ing to Douglas McDaniel, 7, McKenzie Harguess, 8, Cole Carlson, 7, Della Conway, 6 and 15-year-old Bevin Harbin- son. Many runners made the event part of their extend- ed vacation. A large group from Portland — the Bulloch, Sadler, Williams, Conway and Johnson families — bring their small children and make a weekend of it every year, camping up the Lostine River during their stay. The Lostine River Run has been held every year since 1982 and is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Wallowa Coun- ty. Money raised is contributed to the Memorial Scholarship Fund. Wallowa had a blowout Fourth of July this year with what seemed to be a huge crowd. “Nobody was counting, but I think we have a record crowd,” said City Recorder Carol Long. No list of entries was compiled this year, but there seemed to be plenty of en- tries. Grand Marshall Vera Hen- derson made an elegant ap- pearance in a Model A car, and Little Miss and Mister Fourth of July — Teagan Til- lery, 8, and Rawley Melville, 7 — took their positions se- riously and themselves light- ly, waving and smiling at the crowd. Parade winners were: • Henderson Logging for their “oversized load” of Hendersons and logs: City Choice Award and $200. • Little Bear Café for the creativity of their walking hamburger and fries along with their patriotic loat: First place in the adult division and $150. • Community Bank for their huge pink inlatable pig loat: second place in the adult division and $100. A three-way tie for third place in the adult division saw these $50 awards: • The Gentle Family for their hilarious cake with Ma- triarch Peggy Gentle popping out of the top; Aaron Post’s 56 Chev “lead sled” conver- sion pickup; and the Broncs and Bulls Drill Team. • Raiden and Avalene Lewis for their horse entry in Kathleen Ellyn/Chieftain Grand Marshall Vera Henderson made an elegant appearance in a Model A.
