July 6, 2016 ODFW: Depredation from Shamrock pack By Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain Two suspected wolf dep- redation investigations by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife resulted in one possible/other designation and one conirmed wolf dep- redation. The ODFW investi- gated the incidents on June 16 and June 28. The irst suspected depre- dation took place in the Beel- er Ridge area east of Joseph. A rancher left behind several tired cows from a cattle drive in the area on June 16. When he returned with a second drive on June 18, he found the By Steve Tool Enterprise police ofi- cers arrested Jerome Myles Minthorn, 32, of Pendleton and Gerritt Johnson, 23, of Enterprise following a brief pursuit and the discovery of a controlled substance during a routine trafic stop on Satur- day evening. The incident began when an EPD oficer noticed a late-model Toyota with no plates pass by around 5:10 p.m. on Residence Street. The oficer attempted to stop the vehicle and a brief pursuit en- sued. The vehicle turned into a private drive and stopped. The passenger remained with the vehicle while the driver led on foot. Law en- forcement per- sonnel from both the EPD and Wallowa County Sher- iff’s Ofice Minthorn responded. Authorities found the driver after a citizen who saw the suspect hiding on his property called out. Another citizen walking his dog on the street turned over to law enforcement an open switchblade knife he said he found lying along the path of the leeing suspect. A subsequent search of both the vehicle and suspects yielded an undisclosed quanti- ty of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and $1,012 in cash, according to authorities. C OMMUNITY C ONNECTION OF W ALLOWA C OUNTY Both Minthorn and Johnson previously had been placed on felony post-prison super- vision. Charges one or both of the two men are likely to face in- clude: leeing or attempting to elude police in a vehicle and on foot; felon in posses- sion of a restricted weapon; unlawful possession of meth- amphetamine; unlawful de- remains of one of the cattle. The ODFW investigated the same day and concluded that the cow died on June 17, but labeled its death as a possible/ unknown because of a lack of evidence. The most recent incident occurred in the Kuhn Ridge area northwest of Enterprise. Firewood cutters found the re- mains of a calf about 4 months old on a U.S. Forest Service grazing allotment on Tuesday. The ODFW investigated the same day and determined the calf died the previous night. The investigation con- irmed the remains as a dep- redation after measuring bite marks on the carcass and inding the presence of nu- merous wolf tracks nearby. GPS data also indicated the presence of two wolves from the Shamrock pack in the area on Monday. The ODFW pre- viously conirmed the same pack had killed a llama about 15 miles north of the area on May 9. The latest ODFW data states the June 28 conirma- tion as the seventh in Wallowa County this year along with one probable depredation. As a whole, the state has 11 con- irmed wolf depredations and two that were determined as probable. Forest Service roads to close for repairs Wallowa County Chieftain In order to replace three culverts and complete asso- ciated road work on the La Grande Ranger District, the Forest Service will be tem- porarily closing four For- est Service Roads. The road improvements will enhance public access by repairing the road surface and reducing sediment delivery into Sheep Creek and East Sheep Creek. Additionally, the culvert re- placements will provide im- proved ish passage. Road- work will begin on Tuesday, July 5 and is expected to last until the end of August. Law enforcement trans- ported Minthorn to the Uma- tilla County Jail, while John- son was released on his own recognizance pending further investigation. closure schedule will be im- plemented as follows: • July 5 to Aug. 31: FSR 5184, FSR 5182 and FSR 5182510 in the Sheep Creek area south of Vey Meadows and west of Chicken Hill. The construction work will require the full 18 miles of these roads be closed during repairs, and the closure signs will be posted from FSR 51 and FSR 52. • July 11 to Aug. 11: FSR 5160 at Sheep Creek crossing. The closure area will include a one-half mile length of FSR 5160 and will be marked from FSR 51 and FSR 52. Alternate routes in the area include Forest Service Roads 51, 52, and 5155. Con- struction activities will be ongoing, so the Forest Ser- vice asks that visitors respect the closures for public safety.
