Carmie Lynn (Miller) Bunde passed away June 4, 2016 in her home at the ranch in Elgin. She was born Aug. 14, 1944, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Port- land. She was born to parents Carl Miller and Helen Snyder. She joined her sister Sharon Coleman. She grew up in Sa- lem. She graduated from South Salem High School in 1966 and married Jerry Bunde that sum- mer. He passed away in 2003. Mrs. Bunde had fi ve children: Carla May, Steven Dwayne, Richard Carl, Bradley Charles and Matthew Charles. She was not only a mother, but became a successful business woman work- ing countless hours in her greenhouses of C&C nursery, creating beautiful embroidery and sewing. She also worked at the family business Calculated Roads in Scio, Ore. She loved her fl owers, poppies and peonies. She loved her garden and took pride in her ability to provide fresh produce for her family and ability to can and preserve goods. She was an amazing artist. Mrs. Bunde’s love for nature is why she lived the last 10 years of her life at the ranch in Elgin. After Jerry passed away in 2003, Carmie and Marlon Bryant exchanged vows in 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Jerry Bunde. She is survived by her companion Marlon; sister Sharon; chil- dren Carla, Steve, Richard, Bradley and Matthew; 19 grandchil- dren; and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of Carmie’s life will be held when her son re- turns home from Afghanistan (Date and time to be announced). She was born on Oct. 22, 1921 to Charles and Clara Litch in En- terprise and was raised on her parent’s ranch on Alder Slope. She developed a passion for horses and spent many hours riding and exploring Hurricane Creek and the surrounding area. Marilyn graduated from Enterprise High School in the spring of 1939. From there, she attended Oregon State University to pursue a degree in educa- tion, business and English. She took a brief hiatus from school to work in Portland for a Russian shipping company. After com- pleting her teaching degree, she taught in both Cottage Grove and Coos Bay before returning to her beloved Wallowa County. On June 29, 1952, she married her dancing partner, Kermit Estes. Those dances brought them John Bryan Estes and Mary- anne Estes. Their life together was cut short by Kermit’s death in 1958. Marilyn fi nished out Kermit’s year of teaching and continued for another year. During that time, she met rancher Reid S. Johnson and fell in love once again with ranch life, horses and Reid (not necessarily in that order). They were married on Oct. 2, 1959. Daughter Sara- lyn Johnson subsequently was born and the family was complete. Marilyn enjoyed ranch life with Reid until his death in 2010. She was active in the county through the Enterprise Community Church, PEO Chapter R and the Oregon Cattlewomen’s Associa- tion, where she served as state president. She supported her chil- dren’s activities in sports, 4-H and FFA. She returned to teaching high school English from 1967-1970 in Wallowa. Marilyn was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, wife and friend. She lived her life with strength of character, service to others and a love for her family, with a few four-letter words sprinkled in here and there. She leaves behind her son John and his wife Amy; daughters Maryanne and husband Patrick, and Saralyn; fi ve grandchildren; and fi ve great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. But mostly, she leaves us with a strong foundation to carry on with grace, faith, strong values, a commitment to serve others, love of family and living our lives to make the world a better place.
