Freeman, whose body was found in Sheep creek last week, came to his death from blows on the head inflicted by unknown persons, was returned last Friday by the coroner’s jury when it reassembled at Im- naha. As there was no evi- dence connecting George L. Lockett with Mr. Freeman’s death, he was released. • A delightful union meeting of the two embroi- dery clubs – the Teacup club and the Happy Hour club – was held Wednesday after- noon, at the home of Mrs. S. D. Keltner. The hostess served delicious light re- freshments. • Steam for heating all business buildings in the heart of Enterprise can be had from the new laundry which George Gilbert is putting in. A 70-horsepow- er boiler has been unload- ed and will be set up in the building. This, Mr. Gilbert says, will give surplus steam enough to heat all the build- ings in a block, on one side of the street. • While working at the East Oregon camp yesterday morning, James C. McIntyre, woods foreman, slipped or fell and was crushed under a huge log. He was placed on a stretcher which was car- ried to the company’s rail- road motor car, with W. A. Spear in charge. Before they reached town the foreman passed away. • Peter Beaudoin will begin shearing at his home ranch about June 10. He will shear 10,000 of his own sheep and bands for Albert Morgan, Frank Kernan, Frank Gillaspie and Gustav Gaillord. 70 YEARS AGO June 13, 1946 • Mrs. Oscar Davis, liv- ing on Crow creek about 22 miles from Enterprise, was brought to the hospital about 10:30 Sunday morn- ing, suffering from a bullet wound caused by the acci- dental discharge of a .22 ri- fle, in the hands of her hus- band. Main Street Motors. • News from Alder Slope: Our pioneer cemetery here at Alder was well remem- bered on Memorial Day with flowers and flags waving on the graves of civil and Indian war veterans. This cemetery is nice in its old fashioned way. The cemetery has been unused for several years but was in use as far back as the 1870’s. It’s story is a long useful tale of many of the earliest settlers of the county. 50 YEARS AGO June 9, 1966 • Photo caption: The Duke and Duchess of the 4-H Horsemanship play-day which was held last Satur- day at the Fairgrounds in Enterprise were Jim Wilcox of Enterprise and Rhonda Kiser of Joseph. A panel of three judges selected the Duke and Duchess from about 50 riders entered in the play-day. • U.S. Air Force Captain Richard G. Shortridge has been decorated with the Sil- ver Star – one of the nation’s highest military awards – for gallantry in Vietnam. The captain is a graduate of Joseph High School. • 886 people in Wallowa county received a total of $770,628 in social security benefits in 1965, an increase of $107,328 and 58 people over the year before. • The Terri Le Pastry shop in Enterprise closed its doors for good last week af- ter seven months of opera- tion by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Christensen. • Joseph voters turned out at the polls in force last week and gave overwhelm- ing approval to a request for $280,000 in bonds for the construction of a city sewer system. The final tally showed 183 in favor, and 19 opposed, 25 YEARS AGO June 13, 1991 • Approximately 40 fid- dlers from four states en- tertained a good turnout of toe-tappers at the 22nd annual Wallowa County Old-Time Fiddlers contest. Charles Trump of Wallowa retained his crown as fid- dlin’ champ of Wallowa County. • The time has almost come to say goodbye to ru- ral route and box numbers in Wallowa County. All rural residents in Wallowa Coun- ty will receive a letter in the mail advising them of their new legal address which will include a 5-digit number and road name. Sam Morgan was named Outstanding Golfer; in track the boys MVP and Most Inspiration- al awards went to Chad Aschenbrenner, while on the girls side Julie Findley won.
