A10 Business wallowa.com May 4, 2016 Wallowa County Chieftain New pet project coming right along BIZ BUZZ Kathleen Ellyn T here’s a lot of ground to cover in this week’s col- umn, so stick with me. First, the promised list of dog- gie kennel, home care, groom- ing and even walking services. • When you’re leaving town for a few days or host- ing friends with dogs — who then run out and roll in the irst dead thing they ind — you need some help. Mike and Lola Johnson are planning self-wash facility for folks to use their equipment and wash their own pets. The business will be on Eggleson Lane between En- terprise and Joseph. Mike and Lola are still working on their idea. They’ve secured a condi- tional-use permit, but the pro- cess of inal approval continues slowly. I’ll let you know when they’re ready. In the meantime I called a few folks with kennels and got their info. You can put this up on the fridge or cork board for future reference. If you’d just as soon pay the modest price and have some- one beautify your dog, there’s Prairie Creek Groomers’ Te- resa Clough of 85455 Turner Lane in Joseph. Call to make an appointment. Phone:(541) 432-3101 Pam Sasser Kiser of Lin Lee Kennel at 83456 Russel Lane in Joseph boards both dogs and cats. Phone: (541) 432-8221. Carol Ann Vencill offers a house-sitting service if you want to keep your pets at home and have someone come in and do the chores. She’ll house-sit dogs and other animals from one day to a month. For more information call 541-432-1630 or email 14carolann@gmail. com. And then there is Lane Smyth, 14, of Enterprise, who boasts ive years of dog training with his father and Pet Smart. He’s doing dog walking. He wins the prize for best slogan: “No dog too little or poop too big!” Lane charges $10 for 30 minutes and $15 for an hour. Phone 541-426-6500. There are other kennels in the county but not enough ac- cording to Carrie Hermans of Hill Top Kennels in Wallowa. Carrie is full up with her regular customers and can’t it anyone else in right now. So, there’s a business idea for someone. • On a completely different subject: Travel Oregon held the 2016 Governor’s Conference on Tourism at the Wildhorse Resort & Casino outside Pend- leton and ive of our local busi- ness were featured in the Taste Oregon’s Old West guest ex- hibit. The Governor’s Confer- ence is a big deal and we rarely get to have it on our side of the state, so I was waiting anxious- ly to hear who from our county was able to go. They were: Emily Klavins’ Barking Mad Farm, a country bed and breakfast; Bruce and Wendy Reininger’s Arrowhead Chocolates; Troy Berglund of Mt. Joseph Family Foods dis- played his specialized meats; Jody and Michael Berry of En- terprise, Wild Carrot Herbals; and Judy Goodman’s BGood Energy Bars in Joseph. Sara Miller of Northeast Or- egon Economic Development District (NEOEDD) and Mike Lockhart of the Village at Wal- lowa Lake and the Tram also attended the conference. It’s a lot of work and a sig- niicant expense for our local folks to make that conference, even if it is on our side of the mountains for a change. So, good on ya, mate. You did us proud. Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce Director Vicki Searles also attended the con- ference on behalf of the Cham- ber. ”There were the usual high-quality networking op- portunities in the exhibit halls,” Searles said. “The networking alone is a major beneit of the conference.” • There’s a lot on tap this weekend with all of the Moth- er’s Day events going on — but in the business world one of the fun things to do will be to check out the complete remodeling of Wallowa County Grain Grow- ers in Enterprise. The Grand Re-Opening and Open House begins at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 5, with a ribbon-cutting cere- mony and continues through Sunday. There will be special pricing, door prize and “Spin to Win” game all four days. On Saturday come for the barbe- cue hot dogs and drinks, blue- grass band and 4-H pie sale. The Wallowa County Humane Society also will be on hand Saturday. A drawing for sever- al grand prizes takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday. • And inally, a little story of expansion in just the way we like it. A local business is getting new skills and access to new services. Don’t miss the open house at Bennett Insur- ance Agency at 616 W North St, in Enterprise from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 6. There will be burgers and hot dogs and all ixings and cake. The open house and goodies are to celebrate the partnership of Bennett Insurance Agen- cy and Simmons Insurance Group. Simmons has over 20 ofices, 100 agents and 25,000 customers and handles auto, home business, health or i- nancial services. By joining the Simmons Group, Bennett has access to at least 40 new insur- ance products. “This will open up many new books of business and companies we can write with, compare with, and give customers better coverage through,” said owner/agent Kathleen Bennett. “Staff will also have access to diversiied trainings and the ability to ad- vance in their careers.” Please send your Biz Buzz news tips to Kathleen Ellyn at kellyn@wallowa.com. Judy Goodman launched BGood Bars in 2014 and has seen growth ever since, expand- ing her reach throughout Oregon and Idaho. She is especially ex- cited to have her CPO launch at Winding Waters, a river outitter that also sells BGood products. “I thought of the Boathouse because Winding Waters both represents and supports BGood Bars,” Goodman said. “I spent about 25 years wading rivers and snorkeling streams doing isheries research, and I also love to ly ish, go backpacking and raft. These are the types of activities which inspired BGood Bars to begin with.” The event is open to the public and no registration is re- quired.
