Wallowa County Chieftain News wallowa.com July 29, 2015 CHIEF: Hiring process continues Continued from Page A1 “I think some of the decay in the police department over the years falls ¿rmly in our laps as a council, because we have not had the oversight. (Going forward,) we’re going to have a criteria for excellence and we’re going to make damn sure it is met.” Councilor Cof¿n agreed with that much of Lear’s as- sessment. “In the past few years there’s been some seri- ous de¿ciencies in our police force — we have to own up to that,” he said. Although a unanimous vote eluded them, council- ors all agreed that they were committed to providing a far better police force than Enterprise had in the last several decades. They were also unanimous in admitting that while they knew the di- rection they wanted to take, they needed a quali¿ed law enforcement of¿cer to bring the detailed plan to them for their approval. And so the vote was taken. Councilors then went into executive session and returned to vote to release the results of the study done by the Oregon Association Chiefs of Police, with one redaction, approving a motion “to withhold from public disclosure, those por- tions of the police agency re- port which referred to the Ser- geant of the Enterprise Police Department and which were referred to a personnel inves- tigator to conduct a personnel investigation.” They also added that an explanation would be includ- ed as to the reasons for the redaction, to be released with the document. Wallowa County Sheriff Steve Rogers was pleased to hear the news. “I’m glad that they’re ¿nally moving for- ward,” he said. “I’m happy that they are. They need to get it done.” Pendleton Police Chief Stuart Roberts, who led the review of the Enterprise Po- lice Force, was also very sat- is¿ed with the results of the meeting when informed. He advised that given the number of excellent applicants for the job, the city would probably be adding supplemental ques- tions to their interview so as to gain insight into the person- ality and experience of their potential chief. This might take some time, he said, and that’s ¿ne. His impression of the council was, “they want to take their time in this choice, it’s a big decision, and they want to do what’s right.” FAIR: Court will preside over activities Continued from Page A1 • 4/H/FFA Market Live- stock Conformation classes start at 8:30 a.m on Thursday. • Musical performance Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Main Stage by Olivia, a 20-year-old singer/songwriter from Canby who is already a nationwide performer at ro- deo events. A5 GEORGE: WWNF needs public engagement Continued from Page A4 The WWNF and Region 6 need to understand that the same people that feel sustain- ing their customs, culture and economic sustainability are important, are the same peo- ple that cherish the natural re- sources around them. The people openly accept the opportunity to engage with the WWNF and Region 6 on the Motorized Access Restriction Strategy and For- est Plan Revision, but must be fully included, and not brought into the process after plans are developed, as is cur- rently being done.
