Harold R. “Hal” Long, born Feb. 21, 1942, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and guide dog, Floyd, on July 19, 2015. Hal was born in Detroit, Mich., to Karl R. and Dorothy H. (McPherson) Long. He grew up in Detroit, an only child who enjoyed summers with his cousins on his grandparents’ farm. Karl died when Hal was eight — a watershed event in a young boy’s life. After high school graduation, Hal enlisted in the USMC, where he did three tours in Vietnam, plus calls to other duty. He returned to graduate from University of Michigan in mechanical engineering. He also studied at The Actors Studio in NYC. He fondly remembers his 1.5 seasons playing hockey with the NY Rangers — just one of his many interests. Hal married, and had two sons. He moved his family to Oregon in the mid-seventies. In Newberg, he became involved with Lumiere Players, a troupe he later nourished there, and in Tualatin. Hal lost his sight in the late nineties. He then gave writing his full attention. He wrote and directed numerous plays, many performed by the Lumiere Players. He moved to Tigard, married Lynn Docekal Wolf in 2001. They grew Lumiere Players from their home in Tualatin, performing for years at The Tualatin Heritage Center and later grew a branch of Lumiere in their new home in Joseph. Hal is survived by his wife Lynn, sons Chris (Natalie) and Tom (Kara) Long, plus Matt Wolf, Amy Wolf (Arion Canniff), six much-loved grandsons, his guide dog Floyd, best friend Dan Hobbs, several cherished cousins, numerous friends, and his Lumiere Players.
