Enterprise kids welcome at table again By Kathleen Ellyn Wallowa County Chieftain Wallowa County stepped up in a big way after Com- munity Connection learned that funding for the summer free lunch program in Enter- prise had been canceled. In the week that followed that announcement, about a dozen businesses and indi- viduals pledged money to keep the program going. “We have $3,000 of our $3,200 goal,” said Communi- ty Connection Manager Con- nie Guentert. Lunches are being served weekdays in Enterprise City Park. Guentert had estimated the program costs about $100 per day of operation. The Department of Hu- mans Services (DHS)-funded program fed approximate- ly 25 children (ages 1-18) last summer and Communi- ty Connection was geared up to provide again — this time with the help of Build- ing Healthy Families. But DHS canceled funding when records showed that half of Enterprise families no longer needed the service. That still left a lot of chil- dren without lunch and Com- munity Connection Assistant Director Jeff Hensley could barely contain his disgust at the pencil-pushing that creat- ed a percentage requirement that left children without food. “It’s very aggravating,” he said. “We’ve been feeding children this long and then, all of a sudden, Enterprise is not eligible. It was a shock.” Turns out that Wallowa County folk weren’t prepared WRSXWXSZLWKWKHRI¿FLDOGH- termination, either. “I have a whole list of peo- ple who have donated funds, from individuals to business- es — every single one of them local,” Guentert said. In fact, this summer’s pro- gram is feeding more chil- dren in need than it did last summer. According to Guen- tert, the Wallowa County cit- izen-funded program is now feeding 30-35 kids (up from 20-25) in Enterprise Park. Hensley is shocked in a different way, now. “This (result in Enterprise) is awe- some,” he said. “Connie and her staff have done an awe- some job and the communi- ty have stepped up in a big way.” Guentert also had high praise for her staff, Building Healthy Families and her neighbors in Wallowa Coun- ty. “Every one of us feel re- ally good about being able to provide those lunches,” Guentert said. 7R VSRQVRU WKH ¿QDO WZR days of the program contact either Connie Guentert or Jeanette Hibbert at Commu- nity Connection, 541-426- 3840. Brandon Clark, a cowboy on the Pickard ranch in Keating Valley, won the bronc riding over nearly two dozen other competitors. The 31-year-old had rides scoring 75 and 76 points respectively and beat out his nearest competitor, last year’s B&B champion, Ryan Anderson, by a mere three points. Clark had been retired from rodeo when he decided to start competing again after seeing the prize offered for the winner. For his efforts Clark won a 1980 T-top Corvette and about $800 in prize money. Proudly Sponsored By: Eastern Oregon’s Full Service Propane Supplier 201 E.
