Wallowa County Chieftain News wallowa.com New Deputy Forest Supervisor ready By Kathleen Ellyn Wallowa County Chieftain The new Deputy Forest Supervisor of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, Charles T. “Chuck” Oliver, comes with a wealth of experience working with both cit- izen and conservation groups. 2OLYHUZKRRI¿FLDOO\ began duties on May 9, was a charter member of the Catron County Citi- zens group while work- ing on the Gila National Forest in the 1990s. The Oliver citizens group was one of WKH¿UVWQDWLRQDOO\UHFRJ- nized collaboratives at the time. He was later district ranger on the Medi- cine Bow-Routt National Forest and Thunder Basin National Grasslands in 2000, where he also worked extensively with conservation partners. Most recently, Oliver was district ranger on the Bitterroot National Forest in Darby, Mont. While serving 10 years on the Bitterroot, Oliver dealt with budget cuts of over 36 per- cent and helped breathe life back into a for- est timber sale program. “We had been sued and appealed for just about every timber sale coming out of the Bitterroot for a while,” he June 3, 2015 A5 D ONOVAN S HAW HONORED FOR LIFETIME IN LAW ENFORCEMENT said. “We put out a large project, the Trapper Bunkhouse Project, 25,000 acres of analysis and about 7 million board feet of timber, and worked with the local folks, did some collab- orative work, and got it through without an appeal.” Wallowa-Whitman Forest Supervisor Tom Montoya said he was looking forward to seeing Oliver continue working with commu- nities as he had in Montana. “Chuck brings a wealth of experience in working with a broad spectrum of publics on natural resource management issues. His willingness to seek resolution on complex and sometimes con- troversial issues is welcomed,” Montoya said. Koby is a leader on the court and on the field; representing the Cougars in f ootball, basketball and baseball.
