Donald Lee “Don” Hammack Sr. passed away at his home on
Jan. 8, 2010.
He was born on the family dairy in Wallowa on Aug. 25, 1940
to Albert and Marian Hammack. He was raised on the family dairy
and graduated high school in Lostine. Don spent his youth on the
farm until he graduated high school. He then went into the Navy
and spent some time overseas.
Don married Linda Davidson in 1960 and they had 3 children.
Don and Linda spent 16 years raising their children and logging in
the Wallowa Valley as well as driving highway truck together. One
of Don’s fondest memories was spending the summer cleaning
trails on horseback for the Forest Service. Don was injured several
times while logging and never slowed down. He was a “jack of all
trades and a master of many”! Don and Linda later divorced and
Don spent the next few years driving highway truck and logging.
The second chapter of Don’s life was when he married
Virginia. At that point he started his own trucking business
and Virginia helped. They spent time living in Ashland, Mont.,

Boise, Idaho. As Don’s health began to fail Virginia took
wonderful care of him and stood by him through his death.
Don is survived by his wife Virginia, daughters Tina (Tom),
Donna (Tex), son Don Jr. (Tia), grandchildren, Zach, David,
Dusty, Cody, KC, Colby and Cassie.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and his brothers,
Chet, Jim and Glen and his oldest grandson Jeremy.
Don loved the outdoors and spent many hunting seasons in
the woods almost always getting what he was after. He always
spotted a deer or an elk that someone else could not see. The
family has many great memories of hunting with their dad.
Don will be laid to rest at the Lostine cemetery on May 24, 2015
at 2 p.m. with a short graveside service.
Thelma May Peterson, 91, of Wenatchee, Wash., passed
away on Friday, April 24, 2015, after a battle with cancer.
She was born June 23, 1923, in Wallowa, to Eugene and
Florence Knotts.
Thelma was raised and educated in Lostine. She was a
typing champ and on the basketball team that won a State
Championship her senior year. Thelma was very proud of
that achievement. They traveled to games in the back of
an old pickup and slept four to a bed. After graduation,
she married Henry “Hank” Smith. They had four children,
Carol “Maggie”, David “Butch”, Helen and Gary. Hank was
killed in a hunting accident in 1963. Thelma later married
her high school friend, Robert “Bob” Peterson of Wallowa
in 1965. With this marriage came another daughter, Cheryl
Lavern.
Thelma and Robert loved to spend winter getaways
in Maui with Helen and KN. In 1990, they decided to
move closer to family and picked Wenatchee, where she
continued doing her sewing and needlework. Thelma was a
wonderful cook and baker. After a long and very happy life,
she became ill again in 2014, but was able to be well until
the end. She passed away surrounded by family in her home
as she had wished.
She is survived by husband, Robert (Bob); children,
Carol (Carl) Erickson of Centralia, Wash., David (Bev)
of Belgrade, Mont., Helen (KN) Klinginsmith and Gary
(Sally) Smith, all of Wenatchee, Wash.; step-daughter,
Cheryl Driggs-Brown of Summers, Ark.; one brother,
Howard (wife, Donna) Knotts of Walla Walla, Wash.; and
numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-
great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her
parents; brothers, Raymon Knotts and Robert Knotts; and
one sister, Patricia Kiessig.
Thelma did not want a sad farewell, only happiness and
laughter. A Celebration of Life was held Sunday, May 10,
at the East Wenatchee Mausoleum at Evergreen Memorial
Park Cemetery. A dinner was held at the home of Helen and
KN Klinginsmith in Wenatchee. Arrangements by Telford’s
Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
