A2 News/Obituaries wallowa.com May 13, 2015 Wallowa County Chieftain O BITUARIES Donald Hammack Aug. 25, 1940 – Jan. 8, 2010 Thelma May Peterson June 23, 1923 – April 24, 2015 Kathleen Coughlan March 27, 1955 – May 4, 2015 Donald Lee “Don” Hammack Sr. passed away at his home on Jan. 8, 2010. He was born on the family dairy in Wallowa on Aug. 25, 1940 to Albert and Marian Hammack. He was raised on the family dairy and graduated high school in Lostine. Don spent his youth on the farm until he graduated high school. He then went into the Navy and spent some time overseas. Don married Linda Davidson in 1960 and they had 3 children. Don and Linda spent 16 years raising their children and logging in the Wallowa Valley as well as driving highway truck together. One of Don’s fondest memories was spending the summer cleaning trails on horseback for the Forest Service. Don was injured several times while logging and never slowed down. He was a “jack of all trades and a master of many”! Don and Linda later divorced and Don spent the next few years driving highway truck and logging. The second chapter of Don’s life was when he married Virginia. At that point he started his own trucking business and Virginia helped. They spent time living in Ashland, Mont., :KLWH6XOIXU6SULQJV0RQW0LVVRXOD0RQWDQG¿QDOO\ Boise, Idaho. As Don’s health began to fail Virginia took wonderful care of him and stood by him through his death. Don is survived by his wife Virginia, daughters Tina (Tom), Donna (Tex), son Don Jr. (Tia), grandchildren, Zach, David, Dusty, Cody, KC, Colby and Cassie. He was proceeded in death by his parents and his brothers, Chet, Jim and Glen and his oldest grandson Jeremy. Don loved the outdoors and spent many hunting seasons in the woods almost always getting what he was after. He always spotted a deer or an elk that someone else could not see. The family has many great memories of hunting with their dad. Don will be laid to rest at the Lostine cemetery on May 24, 2015 at 2 p.m. with a short graveside service. Thelma May Peterson, 91, of Wenatchee, Wash., passed away on Friday, April 24, 2015, after a battle with cancer. She was born June 23, 1923, in Wallowa, to Eugene and Florence Knotts. Thelma was raised and educated in Lostine. She was a typing champ and on the basketball team that won a State Championship her senior year. Thelma was very proud of that achievement. They traveled to games in the back of an old pickup and slept four to a bed. After graduation, she married Henry “Hank” Smith. They had four children, Carol “Maggie”, David “Butch”, Helen and Gary. Hank was killed in a hunting accident in 1963. Thelma later married her high school friend, Robert “Bob” Peterson of Wallowa in 1965. With this marriage came another daughter, Cheryl Lavern. Thelma and Robert loved to spend winter getaways in Maui with Helen and KN. In 1990, they decided to move closer to family and picked Wenatchee, where she continued doing her sewing and needlework. Thelma was a wonderful cook and baker. After a long and very happy life, she became ill again in 2014, but was able to be well until the end. She passed away surrounded by family in her home as she had wished. She is survived by husband, Robert (Bob); children, Carol (Carl) Erickson of Centralia, Wash., David (Bev) of Belgrade, Mont., Helen (KN) Klinginsmith and Gary (Sally) Smith, all of Wenatchee, Wash.; step-daughter, Cheryl Driggs-Brown of Summers, Ark.; one brother, Howard (wife, Donna) Knotts of Walla Walla, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great- great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Raymon Knotts and Robert Knotts; and one sister, Patricia Kiessig. Thelma did not want a sad farewell, only happiness and laughter. A Celebration of Life was held Sunday, May 10, at the East Wenatchee Mausoleum at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A dinner was held at the home of Helen and KN Klinginsmith in Wenatchee. Arrangements by Telford’s Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee. Kathleen Adele Coughlan, 60, passed away peacefully at her home in Enterprise on May 4, 2015. Kathy was born March 27, 1955 to John and Jacqueline &RXJKODQLQ(QWHUSULVH6KHZDVWKHROGHVWRI¿YHFKLOGUHQ She attended St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic grade school in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and graduated from Joseph High School in 1973. Kathy attended and graduated from the University of Portland’s Nursing program in 1977. After graduation, VKHUHPDLQHGLQ3RUWODQGZKLOHZRUNLQJ¿UVWVW2+68DV a surgical nurse and then in the Neonatal Unit at Legacy Emanuel Hospital before retiring in 1995. Shortly thereafter, she returned to Wallowa County. .DWK\¶VVWURQJZLOODQGDGYHQWXURXVQDWXUHGH¿QHGKHU life stories. As a teenager she would often ride her horse “Nancy” the 18 miles to town and back if a trailer was not available. While backpacking alone through Europe, she visited her father’s childhood home in the Isle of Guernsey, DQFHVWUDOODQGVLQ,UHODQGDQGIXO¿OOHGDVSLULWXDOSLOJULPDJH to Our Lady of Lourdes in France. She had plans to complete a 60-mile horseback ride later this summer to celebrate her 60th birthday. Kathy loved the time she spent with her dog, Jack, and her niece, Ella. Together they joined 4-H, participated in parades and enjoyed life. She is survived by her brother Mike and Lisa Coughlan, brother Brian and Cheryl Coughlan, sister Michele and Travis Keener, and sister Susan Coughlan. Nieces and nephews: Tony Coughlan, Derek Daniel, Alexis Daniel, Joseph Coughlan, Tessa and Kody Walton, Ella Coughlan and Henry Coughlan. Grand nephews: Koen Walton and Keagun Walton. Her parents preceded her in death. A graveside service will be held Sunday, May 17, at 10 a.m. in the City of Enterprise Cemetery. Main • 541.426.3351 Faron Forrest Reynolds Faron Forrest Reynolds, 49, of Milton-Freewater, formerly of Wallowa County, died Sept. 30, 2014, in Milton-Freewater. A full obituary was published in the Chieftain’s Oct. 22, 2014 issue. A remembrance gathering will be held at Bartlett Union Cemetery, Troy, Ore., Saturday, May 23, 2015, at noon. A potluck lunch will follow. AvaLe Thompson Collins was born in La Grande on Nov. 8, 1921. She passed away May 11, 2015 at the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver, Wash. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Larson in Washougal, Wash., two grandsons, Tim Beidler and Edward Larson, two great- grandsons and one great-great-grandson — all of whom live in the Portland area. AvaLe had been a beautician for most of her life and she enjoyed helping her friends and customers feel great about how they looked. She had a kind heart and frequently went to the homes of her clients that could no longer come to her shop. She lived in Wallowa County most of her life, until she and her husband Allen Collins moved to Richland, Ore., in the late ’80s. She made many friends wherever she was. She had lived with her daughter in Washougal for the last six years where she will be greatly missed. Her funeral will be at the Lostine Cemetery at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 16.
