The plan was one of four sub mitted by architect Paul Thiry. The arena would be used for ice hockey, basketball, boxing and po litical and other conventions. The proposal was unanimously recommended by a committee of Seattle sports and convention fig ures. Wednesday, Bend High football coach Tom Winbigler reported his squad in top shape far Satur day's game at Parkrose, starting 2 p.m. daylight time and 1 p.m. Bend time. Then he scheduled a light dum my practice for Thursday, and the injury list skyrocketed. The real big question mark Is 210-pound fullback Lee Cotting ham, who also plays a key role on defense as a tackle. Cottingham was hitting the sleds Thursday night when he suf fered a bad bone bruise on his el bow. X-rays were taken, but no fracture was found. StiU, that elbow Is really tender to touch. And, even with a pad on it, Cottingham is a doubtful starter. If he can't go, his place on the offensive squad will be taken by hard-hitting junior Harold Weath ers. Fred Hamm, a 219-pounder who broke his nose Thursday, will take his spot on defense. Also injured last night was re serve right guard Mike Murphy, who got his knee knocked out of Joint. (UPI) - Coach Len Casanova and his underdog Oregon Webtoots arrived In the hoat of Texas Thursday evening to get ready for Saturday night's football battle against nationally ranked Texas. Casanova said he was worried about the effects of tho hot, hu mid weather on his team. Texas officials expect a crowd of at least 40,000. Following several weeks of scrimmaging and glowing publici ty reports from the training camps, Saturday's the day when youthful vigor and optimism clash head-on with reality. By the time autumn officially sweeps the land Sunday morning most teams should have a better idea of where they're heading. Alabama, undefeated In 10 reg ular - season games last year, is a heavy favorite to start the new campaign right against Georgia in a night game. The Crimson Tido, which beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, boasts a solid defensive unit but must over come the losses of backs Pat Trammel and Mike Fracchia. Ohio State, ranked second last year, is idle but three other members of the top five open their seasons at home in night contests. Louisiana State, with 26 of its top 33 men returning from a 9-1 season, gets ai. early toughie against Texas A&M; Texas, fa vored to repeat in the Southwest Conference, takes on Oregon; and Mississippi, a leading contender along with Alabama and LSU for tho Southeastern Conference title, plays Memphis State. Another game sura to receive nationwide attention will be played at West Point where Army meets Wake Forest. Tho Cadets, believed by many to be starting a new dynasty under the leader ship of civilian coach Paul Diet zel, are favored by better than two touchdowns to clip the Deac ons. In other leading games, hard luck Colorado is at Utah for a night affair; rebuilding Oklahoma hosts Syracuse; Washington, the pre-season choice to go to the Rose Bowl, is at home to Purdue; Arkansas meets Oklahoma State at Little Rock; Utah Stato plays Idaho at Boise; Missouri is at California, and Duke is at South ern California in a nationally tel evised game. EXPECT RECORD CROWD WEST POINT, N.Y. (UPI) The largest crowd ever to witness a football game at West Point is expected to turn out Oct 30 when Army hosts Penn State. It's going to be the Yankees against the Dodgers because their challengers have run out of gas and very soon now they're also going to run out of games. It's not mathematically certain yet but it would take an Einstein to figure out a winning combina tion for the Twins and Giants. For the record, the Yankees' magic number to clinch the American League pennant is down to four and the Dodgers' pennant-clinching number in the Na tional League has been reduced to six. The Twins and the Giants cashed in their chips, to all in tents and purposes, Thursday when Minnesota was beaten by the Detroit Tigers, 5-1, and San Francisco bowed to tho St Louis Cardinals, 54.
