Make It A Practice To Use Bulletin Ads For Results DIAL EV 2-1811 DIAL EV 2-1811 The Bend Bulletin, Saturday, July 21, 1962 7 Prices firm up after weakening in stock market NDS VISIT LIVERPOOL, England (UPI) - Liberian President William V. S. Tubman ended his visit to Brit ain Friday and sailed for home aboard the liner Aureol. By Pttar T. Earl UPI Staff Wrltar NEW YORK (UPI) - Stocks went down (or the first time in a month this week but trading was relatively slow and prices were firming again in the final two sessions. On Monday, the market vacil lated and closed a trifle lower but on Tuesday, sellers came out in some force and demand dried up, handing the list its biggest single loss in 17 sessions. A further moderate decline on Wednesday was wiped out by a gentle uptrend from Thursday on, reflecting a further rise to a near four-year high in the short interest, plus rumors of a special presidential news conference which never took place. In view of growing belief that the economy might be sliding in to a brief recession, brokers were little surprised and not disheart ened by the setback. As one deal er put it, June business and econ omic statistics were "poorer than the market." Construction Dipped Durable goods sales were off, personal income and industrial production leveled out, and con struction r recently a bulwark dipped quite sharply. Only auto production held up well. Steel imports in May reached a two-year high, the administra tion's earlier estimate of 1962 gross national product was low. ered, and strike threats developed in a number of new quarters notably missiles and rails. Although prices went down, Wall Street sages still were riiildly optimistic at weekend, noting that the nearest technical resistance barrier 570-75 in the Dow-Jones Industrial average proved strong enoueh to stem the selling. A sec ond and probably stronger line of defense would be in the 550s, the lows of the May 29 debacle. Time to Watch Many now expect Investors to sit back and watch for a few weeks, leaving in-and-out traders to guide the destiny of the mark et. With this thesis in mind, the best guesses available were that a series of quiet lig-zag move ments would now be seen. The only things the experts saw ahead likely to alter the picture radically would be a dividend cut hv Bethehem and-or U.S. ateei, or an administration decision to try to ram an immediate tax cut- linff measure Uirougn ujngress. The inclusive Standard i Poor's 500 stock index ended the week at KRi Hnwn 1.02 on the week, mis was the equivalent of a loss of i hillinn n DaDer values, uie fltrpnrv said. in the Dow-Jones averages, in dustrials fell 13.01 ot 577.18. rails W 2 23 to 123.05 and utilities tlnmned 1.13 to 113.56. Trading over the five-day period amounted to 15.962.490 shares com rred with 23.073.400 snares week ago and 13,552,340 in the like period of 1961. CI 1771 FD BOBBY STOKE-ON-TRENT, England (UPI) Policeman Roy Green was puzzled when he saw a car n hv u-ith a Dassenger but u-ith nobodv in the driver's seat, The car's occupant, Leonard Henshall, was hailed into traffic court on 1 charge of not havini proper control of the vehicle. He was cleared when he explained he was a driving instructor and was using dual controls on the pas 'senger side. Urs. Gary Stephens, HI 7-7730. In Bend The Bend Bulletin EV 2-1811 Mtmbtr.
