Duquesne trips top-seeded NIT squad Bradley NEW YORK (UPD Duquesne, darkhorse of the National Invita tional Basketball Tournament, may have trouble trying to stop big Leroy Ellis and St. John's In the semi-finals Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. The Iron Dukes pulled the big gest upset of the tournament In defeating top-seeded Bradley, 88-85, Tuesday night before St. John's belted Holy Cross, 80-74, in quest of its fourth NIT cham pionship. Loyola of Chicago and Dayton, which gained the seml-flnal round on Saturday, meet In the other half of Thursday's doubleheader. Coach . Red Manning of Du quesne made no secret of the fact that he was hoping that St. John's would lose to Holy Cross because "I don't know if we can handle that big guy (Ellis)." Pro Scouts On Hand The 8-10 Ellis broke open the St. John's-Holy Cross game by scoring 21 of his 29 points in the second half before a crowd of 16, 388, including an array of pro scouts and coaches who rale the Redmen center a top prospect. While Manning is pondering how to stop Ellis, Coach Joe Lap chick of St. John's has a smaller problem how to cope with Wil lie Somerset but one which could mean the difference in win ning or losing. Somerset, a 5-10 muscular sophomore, scored 28 points and was all over the court, dribbling, hustling and Sotting up plays against Bradley. "He's tho best guard I've seen in years," said Lapchlck. "He's like a Mack truck. Our guards, either (Ivan) Kovac or (Donnle) Burks, will bo like a fly on his back." Ellis hit on 13 of 19; Willie Hall connected on 7 of 9 for 14 points and Kovac made 6 of 11 and 15 points. The Redmen led 74-83 with five minutes to go before Foley led the crusaders late surge. BOWLING 3Se 40e Cascade Bowl Phone BV J I3vJ Por Reservations 744 Bond Before 7:00 Pit. Eagles swap two to 'Skins WASHINGTON (UPI - The Washington Redskins traded cen ter Jim Schrader and defensive back Ben Scottl to the Philadel phia Eagles today for halfback Billy Barnes and defensive safety Bob Freeman. The two-for-two swap gave the Redskins one of the National Football League's top offensive backs in Barnes. But the Eagles, in acquiring Schrader, got hefty help in bolstering their below-par offensive line, Barnes and Schrader were the key men in the deal. The former Wake Forest back has scored 26 touchdowns in his five years with Philadelphia and he will form, a potent one-two punch in the Red skins' backfleid with former Cleveland Browns' star Bobby Mitchell. Schrader, an excellent blocker who played for Notre Dame, has been one of the NFL's top-rated centers during his seven-year pro career. Both Scotti and Freeman are regarded as above-average defensive backs. Scotti, a former Maryland star who plays wing back, is noted as a deadly tackier and one of the league's most col orful players. But Washington Coach Bill McPeak said he was more than happy to get Freeman, in hopes that Uie ex-Auburn back will plug holes in his pass de fense. x FLOYD PREDICTS VICTORY CAIRO, Egypt (UPI)-Heavy-welght champion Floyd Patterson, speaking at a U.S. reception Tues day night expressed confidence he would beat Sonny Llston in their title fight.
