FIX Your Budget By Selling Things You Don't Need. With Classified Ads TELEVISION IN REVIEW 'Storm' grabbed hold of nerve fibers, held tight By Fred Dsml0 UPI stiff Wrlier NEW YORK UPI-Formula for a nail-biting bin;c: lake one raging thunderstorm, add one frightened housewife, a black cat. an Isolated country house, spooky noises, ominous background mu sic, wild shadows, props that in clude the traditional dead body in a cellar trunk. Subtract heat and electricity from the house. Divide all this into three suspense-filled acts. Voilal "The Storm," which hon ored the Thriller" title on NBC TV Monday night. Nancy Kelly, as Janet Willsom. took charge of William Gordon's teleplay and built up an exciting, credible portrait of a woman bat tling to maintain her sanity while beset by a series of panic induc ing noises and coincidences. Directed by Herschel Daugher ty, the hour grabbed hold of my nerve fibers early and kept squeezing and twisting all the way. Plot? You know the one. Miss Kelly returns to her country home after a brief absence and during, of course, the R.T. raging thun derstorm. Unbeknownst to her, a woman has been murdered out side her house. We, the audience, know tills, thanks to a vivid pro logue. Now that Nancy Is home and things are going badly for her and her pet black cat, BAA-Baa, she must try to control the normal anxieties which beset her. One in volves her hubby'fc whereabouts. Hubby, mean and cool in David McLean's hands, finally arrives during the final act and brings matters to a shattering conclu sion. The fact that such tried-and-true, lired-and-true suspense in gredients can still work, thanks to great production skills, causes me to overlook a couple of itsy bitsy sillies that crept into the plot. "Thriller" was out to scare the battens out of the hatches. And they did. As for Miss Kelly's performance, Barbara Stanwyck and her telephone never did it better. "Watching your child's pro grams with him at times, and In viting him sometimes to watch your own favorites, will give you clues to what he enjoys and why, and what distresses him . , , Good taste develops slowly through a process of sampling. We cannot insist that the children like what we like, but we can set standards of taste by our own selections." From "Children and TV," by Josette Frank. What follows Is a bedtime story for adults: My daddy let me watch a TV show with him Monday night. There was a lady named Gladys. She was married to Pete. Pete and Gladys went for a ride to Colbyville. Pete and Gladys were married in Colbyville 10 years earlier. They saw the old man who married them. The old man was called the jus tice of the peace. He found out Gladys really was married to Clyde Entwhistle. He said this w as because Pete wrote his name on the wrong line. Gladys left -Pete. She said she would slay away until Pete married her all over again. She wanted a big garden wedding. Pete bought her a big garden wedding. Pele and Glad ys were married again. Pete and Gladys are on television at night. Here's capsule report of JFK's economic report WASHINGTON (UPI) Presl dent Kennedy's economic report at a glance: Outlook: He views 19fi2 "with optimism but not complacency." The gross nalional product, the output of goods and services, will rise to a new peak of $570 billion. Gains: His a d m i n i s t r a -tion helped break "the grip of re cession" in 1961. After-tax Income climbed by $92 per capita and net Income per farm rose by $350. Antirecession: He wants stand by authority to cut personal in come taxes by as much as S per centage points for at least six months in recessions, power to add up to $2 billion to public works spending, and expanded coverage of the unemployment in surance program. Inflation: Management and la bor should recognize that "gains achieved in one turn of the price wage spiral vanish on the next." Increased productivity is the way to higher real profits and higher real wages. Coals: Full employment and sustained prosperity without Infla tion, accelerations of the nation's economic growth to 4'j per cent a year, extension of equality of opportunity, and restoration of the balance of payments equilibrium in foreign trade. Taxes: He will send to Con gress later this year a major program of tax relorms lor jaw Officials have said it would broad en the definition of taxable in coma and cut rates. Daddy says it is a show for grownup people. I am glad my daddy does not insist that the children like what he likes. The Channel Swim: There Is a better than even chance that "The Jack Benny Program" will move to a Tuesday-at-9:30 time slot on CBS-TV next season.
