Chiloquin gains berth in tourney MADRAS The Chiloquin Thun- derbirds emerged victorious in last Saturday's eliminations for the All-Indian Holiday Basketball Tournament and earned the eighth berth in the end-of-the-year class ic. In their first elimination game the Thunderbirds defeated the Warm Springs Cougars 95-82. In their second and deciding game the Chiloquin squad picked off the Pendleton Indians with an 80-69 final score. Seven other teams will join the Thunderbirds for the opening tip off in the third annual All In dian Tournament. The tournament, sponsored by the Warm Springs Basketball Association, gets underway on the Madras Union High School court December 28 and lasts till the championship game Saturday night, December 30. There will be "double headers" each day and evening during the tournament. Games will be at 1:30. 3:00, 7:00 and 8:00 p m. The Friday night games, December 29. will begin at 5:30 p.m. to ac comodate the Queen's ball, held in connection with the tournament. The Chiloquin Thunderbirds will open the tournament against the Wapato Hawks, Thursday, De cember 28. at 1:30 p.m. Their game will be followed by a 3 p.m. match between the Toppenish Pa pooses, tournament champs for two years, and the Seattle Thun derbirds. Thursday evening the Warm Springs Manpies will go against the highly rated Fort Peck War riors from Wolf Point. Montana, at 7 p m . The night cap, to be gin about 8:30. will pit the Port land Red Hawks against the Nez Perce Nation of Lapwai, Idaho. The tournament will draw about 88 Indian ball players, many who had experience on various college fives in the west AGREES TO BOUT LONDON (UPIi-Dave Cham ley. the British. Lose Christmas spirit High-ranked cage powers tumbled By Milton Richman UPI Stafi Writer Christmas spirit, bah! That's exactly how some of Die nation's top-ranked college bas ketball teams feel about it and the reason is rather obvbus. For some, like fourth-ranked Providence and seventh-ranked Arizona State University 'iiis has been a week of nightmaies. And it hasn't been joyous either for second-ranked Cincinnati or sixth-ranked West Virginia, both of whom suffered their first losses on Monday. Providence and Arizona State also took their initial tumbles on Monday and as if things weren't bad enough, each performed an encore Wednesday night. Underdog Xavier of Ohio hand ed Providence its second straight setback, 67-53, at Cincinnati, and Minnesota bowled over Arizona State, 70-68, at Minneapolis. Easy For Xavier Providence, the defending NIT champions, looked more like sleep walkers Wednesday night, falling behind. 22-8, in the first five minutes. Xavier had a com fortable 36-19 lead at intermission and although the Friars from Rhode Island tried a pressing man-for-man defense in the sec ond half, it didn't make much difference. Frank Pinchback led Xr.vier with 19 points. Arizona State's loss to Minne sota came in one of those games where the losers wish they had it to play over again and the win ners are happy they don't have to. The Gophers saw a 10-point lead shaved to one point at 69-68 with 45 seconds remaining. The over-eager Arizonans then blew two fine scoring chances and Al Dniskin's free throw aft er the final gun gave Minnesota its two-point margin. Eric Mag danz topped the winners with 23 points, while OUie Payne and Larry Armstrong scored 16 apiece for Uie losers. Redmen Win Handily Up-and-coming St. J o h n's warmed up for next week's Holi day Festival tournament with a 92-64 win over St. Joseph's of Philadelphia in New York. Leroy Ellis tossed in 29 points for the Redmen, who spurted to a 30-6 lead in the first seve minutes and held a 46-33 margin at half time. There were very few quips tossed off at this heart-tugging visit and the players and coaches left grim-faced ready for heavy duty when they start their two-a-day practice grind Friday. But in other appearances around the bay the past couple of days, the coaches have been convulsing the audiences with these stories: East coach Bill Murray of Duke "To give you an example of the prowess of our quarterback, Ro man Gabriel, he threw a pass against us that was intercepted. We measured it in the fotos later and from the spot he threw to the spot our boy intercepted it was exactly 77 yards." East coach Jack Mollenkopf of Purdue "We have some fine backs on this East team such as Bob Ferguson of Ohio State and Angelo Daberio of Notre Dame. We don't get that kind of backs at Purdue. Our idea of an offense is to recover an opposi tion fumble and maybe stumble over the goal line for a touch down."
