Bears to test
49er 'shotgun'
CHICAGO (UPI) The Chicago
Bears, who contributed to the
evolution of foolball when they
switched to the T-formation more
than 20 years ago,' face the San
Francisco Forty Niners and their
spectacular new shotgun forma
tion Sunday.
There is a growing chorus of
eNperts who have suggested that
coach Red Hickey s ingenious of
fense may be replacing or at
least augmenting the T-formation,
since pro defenses have
pretty well contained the T in re
cent seasons.
A packed house of 48.000 is a
certainty at Wrigley Field to see
the shotgun and T collide in an in
teresting and acid test.
Vejeran Bear coach George Ha
las, aided by his brilliant assis
tand Clark Shaughnessy, has re
portedly been drilling his squad
against shotgun patterns all week.
The odds-makers have made the
Forty Niners a shaky two-point
favorite. The Bears, after a poor
start, now have a 3-2 record. San
Francisco has won four out of
five.
San Francisco is in good shape
for the contest with only end
Clyde Conner out of action. He
suffered a mild concussion last
week at Minneapolis.
Hickey has not said for sure,
but he is expected to
again go with hij troika system
which finds John Brodie, Billy
Kilmer and Bobby Waters taking
turns In the key tailback slot.
If the shotgun is ready to oust
the T among football offenses, it
is fitting that Halas and Shaugh
nessy, the two men most respon
sible for the T, should be around
to see it happen.

By United Prasi International
It wasn't necessary to ask ex
North Carolina Coach Frank Mo
Guire hou he felt after the Phila
delphia Warriors presented him
with his first victory in the Na
tional Basketball Association.
The answer had to be "awed'"
just like the 4.65S fans who saw
Wilt Chamberlain set two Conven
tion Hall, Philadelphia, record?
with a 57-poinl performance that-
jgave the Warriors a 122-Uj iri-
umph over the Los Angeles Lak
ers Friday night.
Mctiuire, who compiled a bril
liant college coaching record at
Si. John's and North Carolina uni
versities, had his pro debut spoiled
Thursday night wiien the Warriors
bowed to the Lakers.
But Chamberlain who set NBA
scoring records in each of his
to seasons in the circuit was
unstoppable Friday night as he
connected (or 24 field goals in 46
attempts and nine of 17 free
throws. His game-total exceeded
his own Convention Hall record of
56 points and his 23 points in the
second period topped his own
mark of 22. Chamberlain also
hauled down 32 rebounds.

12-5 favorite

NEW YORK (VPl Sugar Ray ',
Robinson, 41. and campaigning for '

crown, is favored at 12-3 to beat
young Denny Mover of Portland.
Ore., tonight in their TV fight al
Madison Square Garden.
A crowd of 10.000 and a gate
of S'.'O.OOO are expected for .lie
10-rounder, which will be tele
vised nationally by ABC at 10 :

For the once-great Robinson, I
who held the middleweight title
five times and the welterweight
championship once, this is the
second fight of his latest come
back. On Sept. 25 Sugar Ray had to
climb off the floor in Detroit to
win a split decision over unranked
Wilfie Greaves. Nevertheless, he
is favored over contender Moyer
because his punch, experience and
aggressiveness are expected to
nullify Denny's advantages of
youth and speed.
Tw enty - two - year - old Moyer,
ranked ninth among contenders
hy the Ring Magazine and loth by
the National Boxing Association,
is a comparatively light hitter. He
registered only eight knockouts
while winning 30 of his 35 fights.
