8 The Bend Bulletin, Friday, July 21, 1961 TO GIVE CONCERT The K.rlitad Family Singen who will appear at the Firit Lutheran Church in a concert Monday evening at 7:30 p.m., itandard time. Karlstad Family Singers fo offer concert Monday Appearing in a sacred concert at the First Lutheran Church on Monday, July 24th, 7:30 p.m. itandard time, the Karlstad Fam ily Singers from Tacoma, Wash., will present a sacred program of choral music representative of the great music masters, such as Bach, Brahms, Grieg, Handel, Grotchaninoff, Mendelssohn, Pi ton, and Tchaikowsky. In addi tion, a variety of national carols and folk songs, together with a group of seasonal hymnodlc gems, will be offered. Originating from a busy parson age home where singing was made a special family project, the Karl stad Family Singers regard their concert appearances as a mission to promote inspiration for fam ilies to do things together. Pastor and Mrs. Alfred M. Karl stad and their five children (Janice 18; Curtis 16; Judy 13; Elizabeth 7 and Deborah 3) set aside one evening each week as "family night", pursuing the difficult task of mastering a wide range of sa cred music. Many of the concert selections have been drawn from the concert repertoires of famous college choirs. The Family Singers, for the sec ond consecutive summer, are spending their vacation by travel ing through 26 states giving 33 concerts from coast to coast Their itinerary includes a few days stay at the mammoth youth convention of the American Luth eran Church to be held In Miami, Fla. , Reynolds eases school refund TROUTDALE (UPI)-Reynolds Metals Co., recently awarded a $222,000 tax refund, has agreed to make it as easy as possible for Reynolds School District which must return half the money. The tax refund was ordered by the Oregon Supreme Court In connection with ' assessments on the company's aluminum plant here. The school district said If Reyn olds demanded Immediate pay ment of the $121,000 school dis trict share of the refund, it would plunge 1061-62 school financing In to chaos. The firm has announced It will defer the entire sum for one year, then take the money in two equal payments ending in 1064. Reyn olds said It will not charge any interest I sm i fa O j''fufl 00 AIM Drl-r Nrf , : in Paul Harvey Newt t:l 1110 Mutto Tim - T:(l0 K-lXmd Musical Patrol ft ro BumliUnd Mustr. The picture was presented at a hearing of the Interstate Com merce Commission on whether Southern Pacific or Santa F should be given permission to ac quire stock control of Western Pacific. The SP submitted an IB project "co-ordination" plan listing how the money could be saved. The far-reaching plan proposed that SP tear up hundreds of miles of track and plan coordinate op erations so that Western Pacific and Southern Pacific could use each other's lines where desirable. WP Independence Southern Pacific stressed that It Intended to keep Western Pa cific as an independent organiza tion in spite of the wholesale con solidations and the fact that the railroads were in competition. Some of the biggest proposed consolidations include combining of yards, maintenance and termi nal facilities In Sacramento, Stockton, Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco. Another change would be the elimination of Western Pacific barges which now make nine trips across San Francisco Bay daily. Instead that traffic would be moved across San Francisco Bay on a Southern Pacific line over the Dumbarton Bridge. Monopoly Charged Consolidation of the railroads would permit abandonment of WP's main yard, its passenger terminal, a freight house and 24 miles of track here, plus a reduc tion of more than 100 in the work force. The abandoned property could then be available for valuable property development, the SP pointed out The Southern Pacific said that under its plan some 500 jobs would be cut at a saving of some $3,800,000 a year. Santa Fo, the "other party" In the battle of giants and the rail road preferred by WP has yet to present its case for seeking control of the small 1,200 mile WP, a key link In transcontinental and Pacific Northwest rail routes. Testimony of the 12,500 mile SP so far has hinged on the econo mies that could be achieved through SP control. The 13,500 mile Santa Fe is expected to ar gue that SP control would mean a western railroad monopoly. Bacaloff seeks Colbert ouster DETROIT (UPI) Jim Baca loff, a stockholder from Portland, Ore., said today he will demand that the Chrysler Corp.'s board of directors oust company presi dent L. L. Colbert. If the board fails to fire Colbert at next week's board of directors meeting in New York, Bacaloff said he would then attempt to call a stockholders meeting to elect a new board.
