The Bend Bulletin, Friday, June 21. 1957 Daylilies Offer Real Delighf With Liftle Work, Attention THE AMATEUR GARDENER (In the following article, one of a series prepared by the Bend Garden Club, the care and culti vation of davllliea la dlscuaaed. This is the third in series, which will appear throughout the 1937 garden season.) By DORIS M. SCIINUR (Bend Garden Cluh) Daylilies were among the lirrt (lowers brought to America, and for real delight there is no present day flower that gives as much pleasure to the gardener for so little work or attention. These lovelies adapt themselves to prac tically any soil and climatic condi tions and will grow in either sun or shade. It is wmetlmeg said, not quite correctly, that Daylilies are free from pesta. The Hqmerocallis of today has been developed since 1930, and there are probably as many as 100.000 hybrids produced each year. In this short time such mar velous advances have Been made that we can obtain them now in colors, sizes and ghapes that are truly remarkable. Jn addition to the common shades of yellow, va rieties are available in pinks, rose, reds, raspberry, browns, purples, and in sells, bicolors and mulli . color combinations. The newest varities in the un usual rose, pink, and purple may be quite expensive. However, there are thousands of standhys available that are very inexpena Ive. For those who have never brown Daylilies, a few woll-reconv mended ones are: Hyperion, a summer bloomer than grows 3 to 4 feet high with large canary yellow blossoms. This Is one that is like ly not to be surpassed for a long time. Another in the same class is Mikado. It is a dark orange lily with a mahogany red throat, 3 feet high, and blooms about the same time. A 4 foot variety is Golden west with waxy blooms of bright yellow. Rosalind, with rosy blooms, grows about 3V4 feet high; and Pink Charm, a longtime favorite, growing 4 feet tall, has flowers of a CENTRAL LIFE ASSURANCE f COMPANY s Bw Wetnea, tn the Hiaie ar lewe, aide I ' the Insuraaee Coma tail en ar ef the (! ef Orttm. guriaaat I law; ASSETS 'Jeetidi f M.4M Mt 4 - l.MMH.M Martiiffe leant tn teal ettale if.JUM,ft!,ril Seal emu 4.lll.Tin.Tl Poller toinf and premium ju a. nr. It has deep red starry flowers on 40-inch stems. The foliage of Daylilies is always graceful and effective, making the planls beautiful both before and after blooming. If chosen with blooming periods m mind Daylilies offer an onportuinty for almost continuous bloom from spring into fall. The most versatile of plants, they can be used in many ways, as accent plants, In, front of shrubs, under trees, and with other peren nials such as Iris, Peonies, and Delphiniums. Once established, the DayliJy produces line Uowers for many years with no need for division oftener than every five or six years. They may be planted either in spring or fall, with fall preferred in our area, usually in September or October. This gives the small plants time to set their roots be fore cold weather sets in, and pos sibly give some bloom the follow ing summer. The second year will see considerable bloom, with their blooming peak actually coming in the third year. Even though Daylilies can be planted and neglected with unusual results, their performance will be very much better with a little care. Lota of water, and a generous feed ing each spring will accomplish wonders. To givf? them a good start, the soil should be dug 18 to 24 Inches deep and mixed well with a layer of compost, well-rotted manure, or peat moss and a balanced plant food. A 2 or 3 Inch layer of soil over the mixture gives ample room for setting the plants. Set on a little mound of dirt with the roots spread down and over the mound, the covering of foil should come no higher than it did at the nursery, about an Inch above the juncture of stems and roots. Level the soil around the plants and water thor oughly. Because the roots grew near the surface, a mulch of peat moss, ex celsior, or other light materials will prevent heaving from the first win ter's freezing. Their own foliage will be sufficient mulch thereafter. ef the G WARD IAN INSURANCE COMPANY f 1nm, tn the Atata ef Tl. aaede le Mm InnrenM Cn mlialenar at Lbe Bte,te ef Ore tm, p rp earn t la AMCTS nmt . fl Marieee toeet ea ml aetata PalicV torn I ind pram Inns nf rat end bene HhIu - Pra ne rlua ed dtfmed Mfe and anrldmt and health ) ,, iMsriat and ether In mitt ant l,eet.4i.re MKIM Hl.ldl.TI in, ma Inneme dite end Kftud TT.Mt 41 Tetal at ft Ut.eM.U LIABILITIES. liejrLU AM THE R FUNOt mnm far life d accldaM nd toe. lie wltHee , 1,11 H4 ad feller end rentrart clelnu Ite.Mi II Tetal llabl Pan Hal eald-up .MIM). They play with, counsel and furnish guidance to youth be cause they speak the language of youth. They may well be compared to missionaries or crusaders for they sacrifice much in personal gain to serve children. Our children, for the most part, are bright, reasoning youngsters. They want to know and they deserve to know "why." The Church of today is alive to this need. Its programs and bud gets are designed in part to answer the "whys" of boys and girls by providing social, recreation and spiritual leadership and activity. Make your children aware of the enjoyment and interest to be had from church attendance and they will happily accompany you there any time. Petersen's Roch Garden Slra.
