(UP)-One person was killed and 38 others were injured today when an Illi nois Central train derailed near here and nine cars toppled over a 15-foot embankment. The victim was identified by au thorities as Mrs. Jennie Covell, 70, of near North Platte, Neb. All of the injured were rushed to St. Elizabeth's Hospital here where spokesmen said at least one of them was in critical condition. Eighteen were treated for minor injuries and released. Road Red Shifts Derailment of the 14-car bag gage and passenger train, two miles west of here was blamed by state police on a shifting road bed due to recent rains and construc tion work- Heavy fog and occasional drizzle hampered rescue workers at the crash scene. Two ambulances collided while racing to the wreck and three oersons . were injured, includine Andrew Russell, 53, East St. Louis, who was in serious condition. Rus sell was driving one ambulance and David and Joseph Renner, Kidnaped Child Found Unharmed CRESTON, Iowa (UP) A Utah child kidnaped last summer has 'been located unharmed at a farm home near here, authorities an nounced Thursday. Sheriff J. R. Ewing and the FBI said Dennis Carter, 19-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jdhn B. Carter, Sandy, Utah, was found Wednesday night. Two persons were held by auth orities for questioning. The child was taken by Ewing and his wife to a juvenile home at Des Moines to await his parents. Ewing said police arrested Mrs. Maxine Radford, Des Moines, at Des Moines Dec. 12. Her husband, Leland, was located in jail at Os kaloosa. Authorities" said the child was found at a farm home in Union County, but the Radfords were not .there. They declined to name the family which was caring for the child. Authorities said Mrs. Radford told them the Carters "gave" her the baby "because they couldn't afford "to support him." Scene of Construction Illinois Central officials said the wreck occurred at a point where state highway department crews were installing an underpass. They said train crews were instructed to reduce speed to five miles per hour in the area. The train, called the Chickasaw, was enroute from St. Louis, Mo., to Memphis, Tenn.,' and connecting with New Orleans, La. It consisted of 10 mail, baggage and express cars, two coaches and one sleeping car. The two dicsel engines and first five cars remained on the tracks. Among the injured passengers was Dr. Lawrence C. Jones, 75, Piney Woods, Miss., who recently appeared on the television show "This Is Your Life." He was treated and released. Lie Test Clears Man in. Chicago CHICAGO (UP) A lie test showed Thursday that an alcoholic machinist dreamed up his story of taking part in the horror slaying of three Chicago schoolboys. Police said the lie detector showed Erwin Staab, 32, was telling the truth when he repudi ated his "confession" that he wit nessed the triple murder 14 months ago. Staab, winding up a three-day drunk, staggered into a police sta tion early Wednesday with his story of watching two companions strip and beat John Schuessler, 13, his brother, Anton, 11, and Robert Peterson, 13, Oct. 16, 1955. He stuck to his story throueh hours of questioning. Then, after a four-hour nap, he denied the confession." Observance Set At Bend Church Christmas will be observed at the First Christian church of Bend on both Sunday morning and eve ning. December 23. The morning worship service at 11 o'clock will feature a vocal solo and three anthems, "Today There Is Ringing," "Lullaby Christmas Eve" and "Angels We Have Heard On High." Earl Roarig will direct the choir. The minister, H. Cecil Bever, will speak on the theme. The Story of The Christ Child.' The Sunday school Christmns program is to be given at 7; 30 p.m. Featured in the program will be the nursery, kindergarten, pri mary, junior, junior high and young people's departments. Bend 709 Wait St. Ike Tells Nehru How Red China Can Ease Tension WASHINGTON (UP) President Eisenhower told Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru that if Red China sincerely wants to im prove relations with" the United States, it must:- Promptly release 10 American civilians still held in Chinese jails. ' And agree to settle disputes with this country without resorting to the threat of or use of force, particularly in the Formosa area. Informed sources said today that Mr. Eisenhower set forth these conditions in the private talks he held with Nehru Monday and Tuesday at Gettysburg, Pa., and Washington. Once these conditions are met, the United States Is understood to be willing to talk over "other mat. ters" outstanding between the two countries. Red China has been pressine for tnlks between its pre mier, Chou En-lai, and Secretary of S'ate John Foster Dulles and for an easing of the American em bargo on trade with the Chinese Communists. Officials said Mr. Eisenhower made no pledges to Nehru on U.S. diplomatic recognition of the rein ing regime or on relaxing U.S. nooosition to Rd China's admis sion to the United Nations. The United States recognizes lh gov ernment on Formosa, hooded by Chiang Kai-shek, as the legal gov ernment of Chin-i. It has led the fight against U.N. membership for Red China. v What Mr. Elsenhower told Nehru could have an Imnortant hearing on the future course of Amerienn Red Chinese relations, beginning early next year. Nehru, who left Washington Thursday, will meet with Chou En lai , soon after his return home from the United States. It is there for any purpose not planned in advance for consideration. Wednesday two or three things were mentioned under this head ing, after the long formal session, that brought both laughter and sentimental expressions from the officials and the audience. The first laugh came when some one mentioned that Police Chief Truolt's wife received a ticket yes terday for overtime parking and paid it. Truett is known for playing no favorites. Mayor Tay lor often mentions that he gets hooked every month. Next came a remark by com missioner Hans Slagsvold. 'Tins Is the last meeting of the year," said Hans, "and my last as a city commissioner. I bring this up for the good of the city." Commissioner Francis G.
