Parker Refuses
to Sign Contract
For Next Year
DETROIT (UP) Detroit Lions
Coach Buddy Parker left the bourd
of directors ieeling like Ed Mead
ows had tackled each and every
one of them. '
Parker, one of the most success
fill coaches in the business, :e
fused to sign a contract for 1957.
Neither he nor Lions President
Edwin J. Anderson would elabo
rate. Anderson said the directors of
fered Parker a new contract, re
portedly a two-year pact at $30,000.
But Anderson would net say why
Parker wouldn't accept it. .
Parker said he was not resign
ing, that he would stay with the
club until his present contract runs
out Dec. 31.
But that only left the officials
more up In the air and asking
"What happened?
Anderson said the board "un
doubtedly" would meet again be
fore D"C. 31. But again, he would
no' say when.
Parker and Arderson were as
close - mouthed Thursday. as they
were talkative after Sunday's loss
to the Chicago Brs.
Then Parker threatened to quit
Dr-fessional football because of
what he termed a "disastrous
rend" that was makinri football a
"slugging match" instead of a
s;ame.
The threat stemmed from the In
cident in the Lions-Bears ttame in
which Meadows tackled Bobby
Layne and the Detroit quarterback
wound no with a brain concussion.
Later. Detroit movies of the game
showed Layne. was not "slugged"
is Anderson eontndd but that
Meadows had tackled him clean
and hard.

With less than two weeks of
1956 left on he calendar, most
duck hunters have put. their guns
away until next season. Especially
the hunters with families, for
"Santa Claus" just doesn't huv
the time to go duck. hunting and
run the workshop, tso.
But for hunters still Interested,
the most rewarding duck hunting
now is probably that in iMalheui

mallards are feeding in the stub

a place that appeals to them.

Som? geese, end quite a few

along the Snake river in eastern
Oregon, and ducks, are becoming
more numerous m Union county,
according to the game commis

Most birds have gone from Sum

ing prospects for the Klamath area
are generally poor, wtth most
birds gone south. Some mallards
and honkers are reported using
Swan lake and Yonna valleys. Up
per and lower Klamath lakes are
poor, with fewer birds 1n the Klam
