Stevenson's stand for "moderation" won him support in 46 states even if it hurt him among Democrats in the other two. Monroney, who is backing Stev- Panmai. Now Taken in Stride By TV Producer By WILLIAM KWALI) Unlti-d Press Staff CorreHiMiinlent NEW YORK (UP) Herbert Brodkin holds the kind of TV job which requires him to cope with cheery little letters like this: "Dear Sir. . . Your show of Nov. 27 was the most hypocritical and coward ly o ;spl ay that we ha ve ever seen on TV. We intend to retaliate by boycotting your pro duct and poisoning your name wherever possible . . ." By now, Brodkin, ' producer oi the Alcoa and Goodyear dramas, has learned to take tnis kind of panmail in stride. "Less than one percent of our mail is critical," says Brodkin, "and sometimes, even some of that is constructive." However, Brodkin confessed that some of the one per cent were 100 per cent dar-bl asters. "We did one show on Nov. 27 with Mclvyn Douglas," said Brod kin, "called 'Thunder in Washing ton that stirred up more contro versy tnan any other show in our scries. ' The Play The program dealt with a busi nessman who volunteers for gov ernment service and winds up as the center of a congressional in vestigation. Its ending was incon clusive and the show evoked such bons-bons as: ", . .A deliberate plan to sub vert our government institu tions. . ." "What is the idea of making Congress an out-and-out villain "Rest assured I shall avoid as far as possible buying anything marked Alcoa." "The play was wonderful, but the ending stank!" Brodkin answers all of these literary delights as a matter ol course. He even answers when th writers seem to be courting no reply. For the record, Brodkin un veiled a sheaf of such letters, from which some of the following comments were culled: From Baton Route. La. "I guess," said Brodkin, "wo re ceived our heaviest critical mail when the Alcoa Hour replaced the old Philro Playhouse. Philco fans yelled '(Jive us bark the slice-of-life dramas' every time we did a comedy. "But those letters have slopped how. Maybe they wrote themselves out or maybe, they like the show or maybe, they just don't watch." Brodkin, former producer of such shows as "The Elgin Hour," "Motorola TV" and "ABC Album has learned, he said, to stick to his guns. "I long ago made up my mind," he said, "lo do the kind of thing I want to do. Estes Kefauver (D-Tenn), ! one of Stevenson's rivals for the! Democratic nomination, told a tele-1 vision audience he definitely will enter the New Hampshire primary and is considering Minnesota's. He said earlier he would enter the California primary. Kefauver called for eleotlon year lax relief through raising per sonal exemptions, labelled the ad ministration's "mussive retalia tion" policy a mistake and said Red China is not worthy of ad mission to the United Nations. President Joseph L. Rauh. Jr., of Americans for Democratic Ac tion, (old a television audience his organization would welcome the candidacy of Cnief Justice Earl Warren of the Republican ticket. Raua said if Warren were to run against a conservative Democrat such as Ohio Gov. Frank J . Lausche, ADA would support War ren. S. to Continue Talks Until All Civilians Freed WASHINGTON (UP) The Unit cd States will continue its Geneva talks with Red China until all American civilians still held m China are freed. It will do so despite Its accusa tion that the Communists have broken their word on freeing th remaining Americans they still hold. The accusation was made Fri day night in a formal government statement which charged the Chi-, liese with violating their Septem ber agreement to free all Ameri can civilians "expeditiously." The statement was America's answer to a Communist Chinese charge that it is the United States which has violated the agreement. Despite the bitter exchange, offi cials said, the United States has no plan to break off the Geneva negotiations with Red China. They said the United States thinks the talks may yet be valuable in win ning release of the remaining American civilians in China and in getting Red China to renounce use of force to settle territorial disputes. Cited 14 Prisoners In its statement the State De partment said Communist China still holds 14 American civilians although it agreed to release the U.S. citizens expeditiously last Sept. 10. "AU United States citizens wha wish to leave should have been out of Communist China long be fore this, the State Department said. The statement also charged that Red China is guilty of "cruel and inhuman treatment" ol the Ameri can prisoners. In making its .charges against! the United States Thursday, Red China demanded that this country give names and information on all Chinese residents in fie United States and help the Indian Em bassy contact them. - I No Representation .Made The State Department retorted that the Indian Embassy in Wash ington "has made no representa tion that any Chinese is being pre vented from leaving." American officials said Brit ish diplomats in Red Ciina have ben able to contact only two of the 14 American civilians still in Com munist prisons. They are John Downey, New Britain, Conn., and Dr. Homer V. Bradshaw of New York. Officials said Downey and Brad shaw both sent letters to the Brit ish charge d'affaires appealing for help in getting out of China. State Department spokesman Lincoln White said ridny t int "the great majority of Chinese in the United States travel on National ist passports and their allegiance is to the Nationalist and tiot to the Communist government."
