Buddhist troops of guerrilla General iia Cut slippt-d in between Saigon and tile rice producing areas to the west, isolating the capital of South Viet Nam from its main food supplies. Another rebellious sect, with Binh Xuyen, a gang of former river pirates, blockaded the cap ital's packing and slaughter houses, threatening the city's meat supplies. The lloa llao troops of Ba Cut seized a series of isolated posts held by Premier Ngo Dinh Diem's National Army, but first reports did not mention fighting or give further details. Armored patrols r u m b I 0 d through the streets of the capital as the American-backed Premier struggled to retain control of his shaky government. The twin blockades by the lloa Hao and the 13inh Xuyen sects caused food prices to rise steep ly. Hoarding had started earlier when the blockade threats were first voiced by the rebels. Hugh Pruetf, Pacific northwest director of the American Meteor Society, to chart the course of the brilliant fireball that blazed through Oiegon skies on the early evening of March 8. Dr. Pruet determined that the huge, noisy meteor bored into the at mosphere about 60 miles above the earth and etploded just east of Mt. Washington. Dotted lines leads to points where the fireball was first observed, and dashes indicate point of disappearance. Some excellent observations were obtained by Dr. Pruett from Bend and Prineville. The heavy ar row is along the ground path of the meteor. (Map prepared for The Bulletin by Dr. Pruett.) by Nadine Seltzer carrying that sleepwalking too far!" Course of Noisy, Brilliant Fireball on March 8 Traced By PHIL F. BROCAN Assistant Oregon Director, American Meteor Society A noisy, brilliant fireball that cast shadows in Burns, lighted the Oregon coast and ratlled ranch homes in Deschutes county as it plunged into the earth's atmos phere at about 7 p.m. on March 8 exploded about 20 miles alxvc ground, just east of Mt. Washing ton. This is the conclusion of Dr. J. Hugh Pruett, Eugene, Pacific northwest director of the Ameri can Meteor society after charting the course of the fiery bolide. Volunteer observers in many parts of the state provided Dr. Pruett with data. These observations made possible a near perfect map of the ground course of the fire ball. Named the "Mad March meteor," the golide disintegrated after boring through the atmos phere at a terrific speed. The ob ject became luminous some 65 miles above the earth and shed sparks and flames until it disinte grated at the 20 mile level.,, Firebnll Also Noisy In parts of Central Oregon just east of the Cascades, the fireball was noisy, as well as brilliant. Charles Lassiter, at Lower Bridge on the Deschutes river said his house shook and his windows rat tled under the blast of the meteor. "The many reports that it broke up evidently indicated that the meteorite was of the stony vari ety," Dr. Pruett said, noting that metallic meteorites do not tend to break. Meteorites, Dr. Pruett said, might be found along the line un der the last few miles of the visi ble path and ten or so miles be yond. If particles dropped from the exploding fireball, they may have fallen over the Santinm hieh way, possibly in the Suttle lake area just east of the Cascade di vide. Mt. Washington is a short dis tance north of the Three Sisters. Lights Pass Region One motorist, Randolph Baker. Bureau of Reclamation engineer it Crescent Lake, was crossing the Santiam summit eountrv when the meteor exploded. He said the coun tryside became light as day. But the Mad March meteor did not provide a show for Central Oregon alone. It wms widely ob served in Lane count v. and along the McKenzie river. One observer was certain it plunged into the McKenzie. Far to the north. Portlnnders siw the flaming object low in the south- nest and described it as a h'nre. fiery ball trailed by sparks. Four fine observations were received by Dr. Pruett from the Bend recion. In the western part of Deschutes county, close to the Ciscades.' a number of persons heard a roar like thunder after witnessing a blinding flash. 67 Reports Received A total of 67 reports were re ceived bv Dr. Pruett from both sides of the Cascades, with points as widely senarated as Burns in Harney county and Coquille. Some of these reports indicated that the KJUN n 1240 hi The FvortP Onlr-I Or?.in I1i'i--r; SUNDAY 7:411 Sim On 7 :tib Sunday NVwn Special 8:00 R.Ho Riblt CWm :.1 I.lnht A Mfe Hour :0O World of Tomorrow 9:80 Herald of Truth 10:00 Revival Time 10:30 Wins of Healing 11:00 World Church 11 :S0 Weekend Ne 11:R Hour of Decision 12 .00 W eekend Ne 12 :04 Your Community Chapel 12 :!U Tabernacle Choir 1 :00 This is the Hour I :S0 Proudly We Hail l:0ie The Unshackled 1:110 Greatest Story Ever Told :00 The World We Live In S:S0 Allen Jones Show Saturday, April 2, 1955 uetolub o CULVER MJlltfl, .,3IEVJI ' EEf fireball, traveling much faster than the speed of sound, was de ceptive. A number of the observers were certain the object fell very close to them. A Grants Pass man thought the fireball hit the lop of a hangar only a few blocks dis tant and called on a deputy sher iff to investigate. A woman in Portland "ducked," fearful she would be hit. A boy in Deschutes county ran into a bam. An observer on tile Oregon coast was certain the fireball dropped on the ocean side of a hill. Some observers said the meteor was large as a full moon, which at that time was coming up in the east. Persons who suw the ob ject from more distant points said it was about as big as a baseball. Bums Sees Fireball Burns residents saw the melcnr in the northwestern sky, and Port land people spotted it in the south west. It was north of Klamath Falls and soulh of Hood River. The fireball, Dr. Pruett; deter mined was traveling northwest as it plunged through the atmosphere at a steep angle. Troy Jones, in a pasture near Oakridge, indicated that the coun tryside was lighted by the flash of the explosion and slid the ob ject disappeared in the direction of Bend. In Prineville, Mrs. A. K. Logan, assisted by Fay Van Schoiack, as tronomy student, was able to trace the course of the fireball among the March stars. Robin Pfeiffer at Junction City said the whole area was illum inated. Many observers said frag ments broke away from the head of the meteor, and one man re ported that the big -fireball was followed by two smaller frasl ments. Seen In Midstntn Mrs. Homer Clark, Tumulo. who heard an explosion about three minutes after Ihe fireball disinte grated, obtained a good compass bearing on Ihe meteor, as did Floyd A. Starkey, Bend. Mrs. Dwight Newton, Bend, obtained a bearing on the fireball as it dropped toward a comer of the post office building. Another good reading was obtained from the James Frakes ranch between Bend and Redmond. Dr. Pruett has expressed his ap preciation for the many careful observations of the fireball that made it possible for him to chart its flaming course through the Ore gon sky.
