Monday, S- . 111 I I I H III FLYING FIRE TRUCK something different In fitjhllng ilres is the aim of the Pisi-ocki Helicopter Corp. of Morton, Pa. As an artist has illustrated the idea above, a specially designed 'copter could reach burning planes downed on mountainsides, in swamnlands, forests or other places in accessible to wheeled equipment. Rescue workers would be lowered to the ground while the flying fire truck hovers over the fire spraying an extinguisher from its crane-like front. Flames would be kept away from the 'copter by its whirl 'n;; rotors. The manufacturer says it could be used in fighting Ares in upper stories of high buildings. Note truck bogged down in swamp. 'Operation Smart' Involves Building Rocket Sled Track By MURRAY M. MOLER United Press Staff Correspondent HURRICANE, Uta (UP) A 12,000 - foot - long trench in a 300-foot-wide, muddy clearing atop Pioneer Mesa, three miles north cast of Hurricane, marks the lo cation of a unique project in American military history. By mid - summer, the trench will have been transformed inlo the underpinning of a rocket sled track that will be used by the armed services in testing ways that crews could use to escape from super - sonic aircraft in emergencies. The multi - million dollar proj ect is code - named "Operation Smart." The name is derived from the initials of the project Supersonic Military Air Research Track, , 'M The Utah rocket sled track will Ko an avtnnuinn nf (ho n inrmnr Navy installation near Mojave, Calif., and the Air Force's famed1 project at Almogordo, N. M. where an officer recently trav elled more than 600 miles an hour on a sled. , Cargo Keeps Going The Pioneer Mesa development will have one major diflerencc. The older tracks were equipped, so that the sleds, alter travelling at high speed, stopped at the end. In Utah, the sled will stop but its cargo instruments or dum mies, with human passengers ex cluded will be shot on off into space, in a duplication nf the ef fect of ejecting a pilot's cockpit from a jet fighter or bomber. The south end of the mesa, where the track will end, is a sandstone cliff. The "cap - rock," geologists call it the Shinerump formation, forms a wall some 200 feet straight up and down. Below the cap rock, the rock and shifted - off sand descends so sharply that the test capsule need be shot only a few hundred feet off the end of the mesa to; nave a vertical aesceni 01 a.auu feet. That is why the Pioneer Mesa was selected for the development after studies that included sur veys of a score or more possible sites in this country and even on True Boundaries Seen in Books LOS ANGELES (UP Tl n ; r"-,l, frn it Un1 boiipvos that the true boundaries of the southwest can be answered only by books and not maps. The mesa is generally level, but considerable work still must be done to fill in a few gullies and blast off some rocky projections to make the site perfect. Already completed is a three inch pipeline carrying water from a pumpine; station on the Virgin River, below the mesa, up the rim rock to the sled site. Water is vital for all operations, particular ly that of filling a trough that serves as a brake for the speed ing sled. Most of the construction work ers now live in Hurricane, three miles airline to the southwest; La Verkin. just north of Hurricane; or Virgin, a few miles southeast. A few reside in St. George, Utah, 20 miles to the southwest. Rubber Roads Get New Tests CHICAGO (UP) The Amer ican Public Works Association says highway officials are await ing with interest the outcome of tests of "rubber roads." iJWing the lust five years ex perimental patches of surfacing containing rubber have been laid on selected stretches of roads throughout the country, the asso ciation said. Connecticut, Louisiana, Nebras ka, Ohio, Utah and Wisconsin are among states that have such ex .Jperimental patches of road ITOfHllieniS Ol T1HHKT ronOS !hP wi" I,row to longer lasting, SKin - piwii and more i1 resilient. But a major disadvantage, the association said, has been the high cost. However, researchers hope they have this problem licked. Originally, asphalt and rubber were mixed ut a chemical plant struction sites. This limited the shipping range to a 21-hour trip from the plant. A combination of tar ind syn thetic rubber has been tested in Wis., experiments are underway on two half-mile strips of rubber bituminous concrete paving. What was probably the first for mal plan initiated by an employer in the United States for pension ing employees after the age of 60, was launched in 1875. Americans drank an average of about 17 gallons of beer and olhcr malt brews per person in a recent year, about four quai ls of hard liquor and four quarts of wine.
