Fight By SCOTT BAIIJJE United Pmw Sports Writer SAN FRANCISCO (UP) - Raul Macias of Mexico and Chamrern Sungkitrat of Thuiland, a pair of little men who have battled before mammoth crowds in their home land, meet in a 12-round bout to night at the Cow Palace for the NBA version of the world bantam weight title. The fight, which-is the first world bantam title to be held in the United States since 1947, will be televised by CBS starting at 10 p.m. EST. It also is being broad cast direct to Mexico and relayed to Thailand by the Voice of Ameri ca. The telecast is blacked out in a 150-mile radius of San Francisco. Macias, a hard-hitting gamecock who also dances a sharp mambo, has been installed as a 2-1 favorite over Songkitrat. The Thai police lieutenant rushed over here on short notice to take the fight after Mario D'Agata, originally sched uled fight Macias here, was wound ed by a shotgun blast during an argument in his laundry at Avezzo, Italy. Promoter Benny Ford, who is staging the bout with the 1BC, said he is expecting the fight to lure 8.500 fans who will put $35,000 into the till. This is peanuts compared with past turnouts for the same men in Mexico City and Bangkok. A crowd of 60,000 invaded a Mexico bullring last September to watch Macias outpoint Nate Brooks for the North American bantamweight title. And during the same month. 61,000 were on hand in Bangkok ax Songkitrat dropped a 15-round decision to Robert Cohen of France for the vacant title spot. The Thai policeman has had only 10 professional bouts since he gave up his native land's "kick-'em-in-Uie-faee" brand of boxing but this is his third straight shot at the world crown. Macias is undefeated in 11 pro outings. The bout suffered something of a knockout itself at the hands of the California State Athletic Com mission which refused to go along with the NBA in recognizing the fight as a title affair. Foi-d has not advertised the fight as being for any title lest he stir the wrath of the commission. But NBA resident Anthony Petronellu is in town with a. belt to give to the winner emblematic of world supremacy as far as that organiza tion is concerned. AA SERMON NEWTOWN, Conn. (UP) - Pastor Gordon Pierce turned his Trinity Episcopal Church pulpit over to a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for a Sunday sermon.
