Newspaper Page Texta a Growth Noted in Business Aspect Of U.S. Farming EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UP) American farming is rapidly be coming more of a business and less a way of life. That's one of (he many changes seen In the nation's future agri cultural setup by I,. G. Monthey, secretary of the American Society of Agronomy. Twenty years from now, saiil Monthey, the average farmer Vwill be a genuine business exec utive with his hands full of man ngemejit problems and little of his own labor figuring In his pro duction." .-' Monthey, who edits Crops and Soils at Madison, Wis., also pre dicted that the farmer of 1H75 wi:i own a larger farm because there will be 25,000 fewer unit than the 1C8.G00 of 1950. He told delegates to the. recent 17th annual meeting of the Wis eonsin Insurance Agency coopera tive hero that modern production meth'Kis are causing sweepinf farm changes. Fewer Farms Although farming is still an im porlant segment of America's economy, Monthey said, "it is fall ing behind other industries li terms of gross income, number of people engaged, and personal in come of workers." Only -15 per cent of the tola' national population now lives op operating farms,' and that figure undoubtedly will be smaller by 1SI75, he pointed out. - Since agriculture plays such an Important role In the nation's economic lite, added Monthey, this narrowing process will place greater responsibility on the per sons who remain in farming. "One- of the biggest problems facing agriculture today,:' lie con eluded, "is that of working more closely with young people, helping young farmers assume their fu ture responsibilities.'' Lots of Room Needed for Jets CHICAGO - (UP) - Jet planes are a problem for city and county zoning bourds because fhnu . quire a lot of room for landings unu tnueons. In a study of land-use problems created uy jets, the American So ciety of Planning Officials said the situation needs facing now be cause the volume of jets in the air will grow in the next five years. In a report setting forth infor mation to be taken into account In planning for jet airports and sur rounding territory, the society said jets need more land than propeller - driven plane because: -1. The jet Is more sluggish dur ing take-off. 2. Because of design character istics sweep-back wings anil the like jets do not lift off the ground as quickly as propeller crnft. 3. Jets must carry a bigger part of their weight In fuel, mak ing lliem slower to gel airborne. 4. Jets need more space in which to land because of their high speed. Shortage Seen In Canned Peas CHICAGO (UP) There proli ably will be a shortage of canned peas during 11I55, according to air Associated Independent Cnnners1 report. The association said that too much rain last summer cut the mm. Some of the 50 Items of peas usually available throughout the year are dwindling swiftly, and other items will he exhausted In n few months, the report added.
