Soroptimists Exchange Gifts ; Members of the Bend Soropti mists 'club held their Christmas party last Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Jesse L. Yard ley, "pn-the north highway. Roast turkey and "Trimmings" were served buffet style, and the eve ning was spent informally. vThe evening's activities included a gift exchange. The presents were, distributed by the Yardley chil dren, Mike and Dick, who were stand-in Santa Clauses in whisk ers .and red pajamas. Allen School Yule Program Set for 22nd - Allen grade school will present its Christmas program Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 2:15 p.m. In the school auditorium. The program will be in the form of a pageant featur ing orchestra and chorus music and tableaux. The orchestra is composed of 28 members, and the chorus of 80 voices. Soloists will include Janet Whitney, clarinet; Richard Gass- ner, trumpet, and Gerald Blucher, accordion. Piano accompanists are Judy Wilson, Diantha Kelsoe, Jan Bowlus and Patty Rogerson. Members of a girls' sextet are Carolyn Munkers, Donna William son, Susan Diver, Daune Bailly and Judy Wilson, with Katliy Boardman as soloist. - Speaking and tableaux parts are taken by the following: ijusan Di ver, Leslie Bunco, aharon re wards, Janet Madden, Jeanne Pierce, Gerald Blucher, Peggy Matson, Linda Johnson, Charles DeSully, Gary Kamisky, Steve Wil kins, Sylvia Goodrich, Christine Ruud, Linda Wright, Robert Fix, Leonard Deel and. ESA Sorority Has Christmas Party The annual Christmas party for members of Beta Alpha chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, and their escorts, was one of the gay events of the holiday season The affair was held Saturday eve ning, Dec. 18, at the VFW hall, with 25 persons present. . The hall was decorated with small lighted candles made by the chapter members, and a larg; Christmas tree. Dancing and games provided en tertainment, and buffet refresh ments were available throughout the evening. On the committee for the party were Mr. and Mrs. Nor man Dull, Miss Ruby Malmstrom, Mrs. Charles Latto and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. The pro ject was -master-minded by Joe Rosswog, right, junior, who worked out the design with the assist-1 anee of other members of Miss Sylvia Veatch's geometry class. Sunshine through the ' cellophane gives a warm glow to classroom sessions.' The wi ndow is lighted at night, and may be viewed front Bond street entrance to the school. ' : .v ' - : ' ': Kindergarten Has Christmas Recital Wednesday Night For .the first time in the history of Mrs. Phil Philbrook's kinder garten, the Christmas recital was held in the evening, to enable fa thers to attend. It was given last Wednesday evening at Mrs. Phil brook's residence studio. The va ried program included the singing of old English, Swedish, French and American ballads. Wanda Croy and Kristi Woerner did the announcing. Each child made a blackboard drawing of the American flag, to the accompaniment ol My Coun try 'Tis of The." The ancient arF of playing a tune on bottles was employed in stead of instrument work. The children trimmed the Christmas tree while singing an appropriate melody. Kristi Woerner and bteve Moore played the parts or tne mother and father in this skit A flannelaranh of the manger scene was constructed as each child recited the corresponding poem, taken from a twelfth cen turv carol. As a finale, the children and their parents and other guests joined in unaccompanied singing of traditional carols. The- children presented their parents gifts they hnd.mnde and wrapped, and treats verc riven to the children. Talt'.ng part in the program were Wanda Croy, Liz Landers, Joyce Ann Miller, Jeanette York, Kristi Woerner and Steve Moore. 4-H Club News RED RIDERS ' By Slmrnn Ilirtzt-I The Bend 4-H Red Riders held a reorganization meeting Dec. 13 and elected officers as follows: President, Lianne Grimsley; vice president, Donna Gore; secretary, Joanne Johnson; treasurer, Bar bara Carlile; news reporter,. Shar on Hirtzel; song leaders, Donnalee Sargent and Lynnea Haugeberg. December 30 is the date of the Christmas potluck to be given by the Young Stockmen s club at the Eastern Star Grange hall. All Red Riders, and parents of mem bers of both groups, are invited. The Red Riders will hold their next meeting Jan' 10 in the high school lunch room. Bend Youth .on World Cruise Roland D. .Benson, aviation storekeeper second class, USN, Bend, was aboard the attack air craft carrier USS Hornet when it reached San Diego, Calif., earlier this month after an eight-month cruise around the world. Deploying from Norfolk, Va., on May 11, 1954, the Horner visited Lisbon and Naples, Italy and passed through the Suez Canal, stopping at Ceylon and Singapore before joining the U.S. First Fleet in June. Operating from Manila Bay, Philippine Islands, the Hornet also visited Yoiosuka, in Japan, and Hongkong, British crown colony. Jack and Jillville To Hold Program Jack and Jillville, kindergarten operated by Mrs. F. V. Bowlus, will hold its Christmas program Thursduy, Dec. 23, at 10 a.m. at the kindergarten." The program will include a one-act play; a Christ mas pageant and songs, recitations and dancing. The children will have their Christmas party and exchange of gifts Wednesday morning. School will start at 9:30 a.m., the regular time. The sophomore trio Vivian Tendollen, Lorraine Wilden and Norma Steen was accompanied by Gail Wil Kiwanians, under pain of dollar fines, brought Christmas presents which were distributed by a Santa Claus who revealed not a few of the mannerisms of Dr. Grant Skinner, Presents and fines were later turned over to the Bend fire de partment for the children that the department plans to remember. Nativity Story Will Be Repeated A Christmas program 'that has been a favorite with radio audi ences of the Pacific Northwest is to be repeated this Christmas Eve for the 20th consecutive year. It is The Story of the Nativity," pro duced and presented annually by Pacific Power and Light company. Against a background of choral voices and orchestra, the familiar Christmas story in all its power ful simplicity unfolds in beautiful music and reverent narrative. Fea tured soloists are Brunetta Mazzo- lini, who has sung with the North west Grand Opera Company and with the Portland and San Fran cisco symphonies, and Dean Lie ber, rising young tenor who has been heard in Civic Opera associ ation, Civic Theater and Holladay Bowl productions in Portland. The program will be heard here this year on Friday at 8:30 p.m. over station KBND. 'Nativity Star' Still Visible in Morning Hours The' "nativity star," lustrous Ve nus, was still visible' In Bend to day shortly before the noon hour. Brilliant in the dawn, Venus, the morning star, rapidly faded as the sun mounted into the mid-Oregon sky, but was located by Bend resi dents who used the thin crescent of the moon as a guide. Gail Thomas, Western Pine As sociation forester stationed in Bend, was among local residents who spotted Venus after the sun was up and described it as beautiful sight." Savings Group At 20 Year Mark The Deschutes Federal Sav ings and Loans association, head ed this year by George P. Gove, is observing the 20th anniversary of its founding in ' Bend through distribution of a 3 per cent semi annual dividend, payable as of Dec. 31. 1954. This dividend, Walter G. Peak, secretary of the association since its organization in the (all of 1934, reports,, will mean the distribution of some $41,000 in the local com munity. The association's first financial statement revealed assets of S13,- 223.40. As of Nov. 39 this year, assets had ' increased to $3,023, 236.51. , - Original members of the board of directors were C. Catholic Rites v Set for Region PRINEVILLE The Catholic churches in PrineviUe, Redmond, Madras and Warm Springs have set hours tor Christmas service. In PrineviUe, Rev. Richard Con way has announced there will be a high mass at midnight Friday night. On Christmas day there will be low mass at 9 a.m.. followed by benedictions. Confessions ' Friday will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and from i io :ju p.m. ...... There will also be high mass at midnight Friday in Madras, with low mass at 9:30 a.m. Sat urday. Jack Moseley, Larry Peden and Bev erly Pope were the senior class in itiates. President Betty Michel presided at the tapping ceremon ies for them and for 14 juniors. In the latter group are Susan Adams, Jane Elliott, Beverly Fox, Courtney Lantz, Susan Latta, Pat Miller, Bill Massey, Ann Poole, Terry Quinn, Betty Rippee, Elda Schoonover, VicM Schneider, Kay Trueax and Myrha Widener.
