Jorgcnsen, 36, Ever green Park, 111., an engineer, and George A. Thorsen, 34, Oak Lawn, a turbine operator. .. Authorities said a 100,000 kilo watt generating unit exploded as engineers fed steam into it. Cause of the Wast was not known. -An eyewitness said- the blast blew out the whole south section" of the giant plant, which had taken seven years to construct a cost of 100 million dollars. .The entire plant, wliicfi.'i'vad .a capacity of 640.000 kilowatts, was knocked out of commission. ; Other plants would be able to sup ply the lost power to Chicago and suburbs, the spokesman said. . R. E. Corcoran, department geologist, will direct the mapping project in an area bounded by Vale on the north, the Oregon- Idaho border on the cast, and Owyhee reservoir in the south central portion. Interest in the oil and mineral development of the area has been shown by drilling operations of the El Paso Natural Gas company near Double Mountain, the board said. Corcoran made preliminary stu dies of the area as a .graduate geologist at the University of Ore gon, and . later- through his work wUh the department. Went Fishing, Bagged a Bear WARREN, N.H. (UP) Ralph Morgan of Suncook and Marcel Gagnon of Hooksett started out on a fishing 'rip and got a bear. They spotted the 200-pound fe male bruin as their car swung into the driveway of Morgan's camp here. The men hastened into the camp, grabbed shotguns and took separate routes into the woods. Morgan sX)tted- the bear. The bear spotted Morgan; stood on her hind legs and was a perfect target for a blast- from his 12-gaugc shot gun. Morgan and Gagnon were so excited "that they never did get around to fishing that day. Big, big quart bottle serves six! Made by 'l sL. L... l ROYAL CROWN COLA! The attack on the philanthropic foundations was made in a 416- page report by the three Republi can members of the committee. The GOP members. Chairman B. Carroll Recce (Tehn) and Reps Jesse P. Wolcott lMich.)and Ang ler L. Goodwin (Mass.), also al leged the foundations have "sup ported attacks upon our social and governmental system and financed the ' promotion- of socialism and collectivist ideas." In a 12 - page dissent, the' two Democratic committee members. Reps. Wayne L. Hays (Ohio) and Mrs. Grade Pfost (Idaho), dif fered sharply, claiming-6ome of the statements in the majority re port far untrue on . their face, others are at best only half-truths and ti.e vast majority are mis leading." -' Newspr.pen Attacked Most of the committee's fire was aimed at the Ford, Rockefeller and Carnegie foundations and at Ihe New York Times, the New York Herald-' Tribune and the Washington Post and Times-Herald, newspapers which had criti cized the committee's- methods and whose publishers also are connected with foundations. Dean Rusk, president of the Rockefeller Foundation, said the committee majority accepted flimsy allegations. . ,- as fact without the support of trustworthy evidence in making its investiga tion." He also noted the founda tions were denied the right to Challenge charges against them by direct public testimony. II. Rowan Gaither Jr., president of the Ford Foundation, called the committee's hearings "biased from start to finish." He said the re port "throws mud not only at philanthropy, but also at Ameri can schools, the press, business, 'professional and religious groups and whole areas of scholarly and scientific endeavor. Reply to Charges Philip L. Graham, President and publisher of the Washington newspaper, called the charges in the majority report "untrue.'; He said Rep. Mrs. Helen Rogers Reid, presi dent of the Reid Foundation, noted that the foundation was es tablished by the late Ogden Reid, president of the New York Herald Tribune, and commented: "We can reach no other conclus ion than that the attack on the foundation stems from the Herald Tribune's editorial criticism of the committee's biased and one-sided methods of investigation." The New York Times said it would have no comment. Rep. Goodwin said he signed the majority report with "strong reservatteis." He said he dis agreed with s.-me of its major conclusions but there would have been no majority report if he had refused to siijn. He said he agreed, however, with the basic GOP find ing that the foundations supported subversion. The Republicans also charged Ihe "leftist trend of the founda tions. . . has worked to undermine some of our precious institution? and some of our basic moral and religious and political principles," Reports1 Indicate Cardinal Freed VIENNA (UP) The Catholic News Service said today "eyewit ness reports" from Red Hungary confirm persistent rumors Josef Cardinal Mindszenty has been freed after nearly six years in rison. '. i The official church agency -said the 62-year-old cardinal who had been sentenced to prison for lite, is living in one of the western districts of Red Budapest. It said he has not been allowed to resume official religious func tions. Communist authorities in Buda pest could not be reached Imme diately for comment on the report, but they have refused consistently to discuss the i Mindszenty case since the- cardinal's release was first reported four days ago. Mindszenty, one of the first vic tims of Red persecution of s the church, was convicted early in 1949 of "plotting" to- overthrow the Communist regime. correct publication of any want ad.
