Boy Born 3 Weeks
After Twin Girls
DETROIT (UP) A young moth
er gave birth to a healthy six
pound boy Friday night just three
weeKs alter having twin girls.
Physicians proclaimed the case
a medical wonder. They said the
newborn boy was probably con
ceived about two weeks after the
twin girls.
The mother, Mrs. Boyd Braxton,
28, a Negro, has a twin womb
and a double uterus. She has six
children besides the three born
during the last three weelis.
Dr. Thomas Y. Hum, Mrs. Brax
ton s physician, said the three chil
dren would be considered triplets
despite the time lapse between
births.
The twin girls were delivered
at Kiefer Hospital on July 31.

WASHINGTON (UP) The new
federal housing law permits home
owners with government insured
mortgage. To be eligible, it must
home improvements without tak
ing out separate loans.
The procedure is ' known as
"open end" mortgaging and is al
ready permitted in most states to
some degree. Under it, home own
ers simply borrow against the
money they have repaid on their
home mortgages.
Not any kind of home improve
ment will qualify for an open-end
mortgage. To be eligible, at must
be a permanent addition to the
home and contribute to the home's
basic livability.
For example, such items as
screen porches would quality,
but washing machines and some
appliances would not. i
The size of the improvement
loan allowed under these provi
sions is lihiited by the amount ot
the mortgage paid oh, ana Dy tne
lender s wulingness to lend.
The improvement loan would be
come a part of the mortgage and
would thus be subject to the rules
for mortgages: the Federal Hous
ing Administration will guarantee
05 per cent of the first $9,000 of
value, and 75 per cent of the rest,
up to a limit of $20,000 on one
and two family homes. Mortgages
may run up to 30 years.
If the improvement were made
under the regular FHA improve
ment and repair program, it
would be subject to a $2,500 ceil
ing, and could not run for more
than three years and 32 days, and
the FHA could not insure more
than 80 per cent of its value.
For one type of improvement
adding rooms a home owner
can borrow more than the paid
off portion of his mortgage, un
der certain conditions.

Texas plains, I honestly believe
television is wide open for the
youth of America. I wish I would
help you all, as I have aided Con
nie Russell, Sammy Davis Jr., Ed
die Fisher and Joel Gray among '
other new names in show , busi
ness. But if the benefit of my advice
will serve, here it is, if you're
seeking a fothold in TV:
Find yourself a partner. No, not
as a song-and-dance team. But
if you're an actor, find a writer
who has the same ambition: to
make a name for himself in TV. ,
The networks want new ideas. If
you can put together a package
of your own, you can cut coupons
for a long time.
Man With an Idea
You're skeptical? I'll give you
an example of a young man with
an idea. Cy Howard was a comedy
writer for Jack Benny. But he
wasn't happy. He wanted to be .in
business for himself. So he cre
ated "My Friend Irma", first a
radio show, then a movie which
made Martin and Lewis household
names, now the TV series. I was ;
with Cy later when movie produc
er Hal Wallis handed him a check
for $100,000 as advance payment '
for his movie, "That's My Boy."
Cy found out what the public
wanted. You, as an actor or writ
er, must do the same. Analyze
the shows you see, figure out
what the public' wants and give it
to them. This is the only secret
of success I can give you, except
for one qualification: Give the pub
lip what it wants more cleverly
than anyone else oan do.
Forget Towers
You can't, however, sit in your
ivory tower and wait to be dis-.
covered. It's all well and good
to haunt casting offices in Holly
wood or New York. By the law
of averages, you will get a job
now and then. If you eat regu
larly, you're lucky.
But if, on the otner nana, you
have a partner, such as I have
outlined, your chances are ever so
much better to get a hearing.
Rather than saying, "I am an ac
tor," you and a writer can present
a packaged idea yourselves and
the plan for a series.
Network and agency officials
welcome constructive thinking like
this. After all, their heads start
to ache at the end of the day, too,
trying to dream up new shows.
I'm not setting myself up as the
sage of show business. It's merely
I've been around a few years.
My eyes are fairly big and I've
seen a lot. I know the problems
facing youngsters in our business.

ing that the bag be held for him.
He was trying to hop a freight
car in Montgomery, the letter said,
and the train pulled off with the
dufflebag before he could climb
aboard.
