THE BEND BULLETIN. BEND. OREGON THURSDAY. DECEMBER 18. 1952 Red Strategists Sometimes Get Tangled in Typewriters What these propagandists didn't count on was the effect inside the party and. among the fellow-travelers of Western Europe. Nor had they realized that the anti-Jewish character of the Prague trial would knock the props from under the Communist-sponsored world-wide campaign for the re lief of the convicted American, atom spies, Esther and Julius Ros enberg. The Rosenberg case was being presented as a classic of a D t i -Semitism. Now the Reds are in a desperate scramble to prove there was noth ing anti-Semitic in the Prague trials after all. Their efforts have not been suc cessful. London reports say the anti Semitic nature of the Prague trials struck a more damaging blow to the British Communist party than any of the earlier purges in East ern Europe and that the party is Buffering both from a loss of mem bership and money. One who left the party after pub licly expressing his "revulsion" over the Prague trials was Benja min Frankel, composer and con ductor who had been a party mem ber for 12 years. Another effect has been to accel erate the deoiine of the London Daily Worker, whose circulation now is down to about 30,000. In Belgulm, party Secretary Ed gar Lalmand admitted the Prague trial had caused "uneasiness" among Comm'inists, but said these were ideologically undeveloped" and should be suspected of being "capitalistic sp.es." In Denmark, 'Communist p arty member Anders Doesslng, son of the late Danish minister to Mos cow, .criticized Communist at tempts to "explain" the Prague trials. The official Danish Commu nist party oif;an promptly labelled him a "Titoisi." v In Italy, the Communist press tried to lessen the impact of the Prague trials by running several pro-Jewish stories. Throughout Western Europe, the Communist press currently is car rying statements purporting to sn anate from Jews defending the pol icies of the Czech government. - However, not one of these state ments has come from responsible Western Jewish .organizations : or personalities. ; ' . . , 1 , MORE LOST ARROWS BRATTLEBORCv Vt. drV- This year, for the second sucoessive season, nobody was able to bag a deer in Windham County during a special period set aside for arch- Horse's Broken Jaw Js Repaired PAJNESVJIXE, O. By BILL NEWSOM (United Prm Foretell Nawi Editor) The "big He" is a recognized propaganda trick used effectively by the Nazis' late and uniamented Dr. Joseph Goebbels and today by the Kremlin promoters, t: But once In awhile these Commie Strategists get tangled in their own typewriters. f Such has been one of the effects of the recent Prague "purge" trials in which 11 out of 14 defendants were of Jewish origin. , : On the one hand, in their broad casts to the Arab nations, the Reds used the Prague "purge" as proof of the dangers of Zionism to the Arab states. They also made much of Czecho slovakia's demand for the recall of the Israeli minister on the charge that he was linked to a Western espionage ring.
