A profusion of flowers lent color and fragrance to the large hall, and a display of garden vegetables in one corner gave evidence that Gilchrist gurd- encrs are practical, as well as beauty-conscious. The proof that flowers 111 an amazing variety grow in the pine studded village was accepted as n challenge by visitors from areas which have fewer natural obstacles to overcome. The soil at Gilchrist is of pumice type, and In order to have gardens, residents have hauled lopsoll from the narrow valley that borders the Deschutes. The beauty and delicacy of the blossoms, and the Paul Uunyan qualities of the vegelubles, caused some visitors to remark that the "impossible" had been accom plished. Punch was served from a beautifully-appointed table in the lounge of the large clubhouse. A net table cloth over light blue was the back ground for heirloom silver pieces and pink asters. Mrs. V. I. Header, Mrs. It. J. Tereell. Miss Mary Geales Gilchrist and Frank Gil christ Jr. poured. Judges were Mrs. Men Evick of Madras, hoard member foe the Cascade district of the Oregon Fed eration of Garden Clubs, and Mrs. C. I.. Hasmussen and Mrs. K. M. Stokesberry of Hend. In the section for vegetables, Mrs. W. A. Hilt placed first. Mrs. Leslie Norlin second and Mrs. Guy Ferguson third. In the horticulture section. Mrs. Isom Kzell was first with roses. Mrs. Leslie Norlin second w i t h sweet peas, and Mrs. Satn Ware third with delphiniums. Mrs. Guv Ferguson's gladiolus won first and second places, and Mrs. C. U. Hrcazeale's were third. The bride, given in marriage by her fnther, wore a ballerina length gown of white nylon set with lace oversklrt. A fingertip veil with lace crown was held In place by orange blossoms. C. Coyner home. The speaking pro gram followed a picnic supper, at which time members present were given their assignment for the evening. Invocation was given by Mrs. Rhoda West, club president, who introduced Mrs. Elsie Dunn as topic mistress. Various topics' were discussed, including "Pelton Dam," "Our Need for Signs for Tourist Directions," "What I'd Like If I Were Queen For a Day," "Bend's New Juniper Park." Mrs. Wilbur Wleprecht was in troduced as toastmistress, and Mrs. Fay, Kolmer was speaker of the evening. She chose as - her subject, "Advertising Bend."' In dividual critic was Mrs. Keats Oliver. Mrs. West gave the "hot spot speech, 'The Lady on the Bus." Mrs. Percy Madden was lexicologist, Mrs. Art Brinson timekeeper, and Mrs. Don Mldlam general evaluator. Others taking part In table top ics discussion were Mrs. Bernice Seeley, Miss Katheryn Kelley, Mrs. E. B. Hogan, Mrs. W. C. Coy ner and the following guests: Keats Oliver, Percy Madden, W. E. Galbralth of Madras. Following the wedding a recep tion was held in the garden of the bride's home. Her grandmoth er, Mrs. W. F. Galbraith of Vicks burg, Ariz., and her aunts, Mrs. Melvln L. Cyrus, Redmond, and Mrs. Gordon Galbraith of Madras, assisted, as did the Misses Sharon Moran and June Gilbert of Red mond, and Joan Hedgepith of Madras. Both Dahlen and his bride are Redmond high school graduates. The former Miss Galbraith is re ceptionist at Medical-Dental clin ic and the bridegroom is in the national guard headquarters of fice located at Redmond alrbase. The bride chose a white linen suit with purple accessories and flowers from her bouquet for their wedding trip to California. Upon retyrn they will reside in the Windsor apartments, Redmond. !M8JUK.j-:'a Redmond Girl Weds Airman In Home Town REDMOND, Aug. 21 In a set ting of pink and white gladiolus, Miss Wylmath Fern Pearson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Pearson, of Redmond, became the bride of Rodney Dale Jones, A2C, formerly of Redmond, whose par ents are Mr. and Mrs. Hollls Jones, now residents of Odell, Or egon. The double-ring ceremony was performed Sunday, August 17, at 1 :30 p. m., in the Redmond First Christian church, with the Rev. Wendell Herblson from Prineville officiating. The bride was given In mar riage by her father. Paul Rada baugh, uncle of the bride, from Weiser, Idaho, was vocal soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Radabaugh who also played the wedding mu sic. The former Miss Pearson chose a white linen street length wed ding dress and white lace hat. She carried a cascade bouquet of shat tered white carnations and ste phanotis, centered with a yellow orchid. Her matron of honor was her sister, Mrs. Robert Bristol, of Portland, who wore a blue street length frock and carried rubrum lilies and white bouvardia. Rob ert Bristol was the best man. A wedding recention followed at the Redmond hotel coffee shop, with Mrs. F. G. Prescott from Grants Pass cutting the cake, and Mrs. L. F. Hamar of Elmira pre siding at the punch bowl. Miss Jo Morton of Redmond handled the guest book and Miss Lois Hamar assisted at the reception. The young Mrs. Jones 'is a Red mond high school graduate, at tended the University of Oregon and was employed fon a year in the Lane county office of schools at Eugene. Jones also was graduated from Redmond high school after mov ing here with his family from Tillamook three years ago. He took specialized training in refrig eration at West Coast Trades In stitute, Portland, and worked in the refrigeration field locally for a time before entering service. He returned August 1 ' from a year's assignment in Iceland where he was attached to the air base as senior refrigeration spe cialist. After a short honeymoon the newlyweds will go to Florida where the bridegroom is sched uled to report to Eglin field. The bride's parents entertained the wedding party and other out-of-town guests at a breakfast Sun day morning in the Redmond ho tel coffee shop. . Mrs. Coyner On New York Trip; To Be Honored Mrs. Craig Coyner is en Voute to the American Legion Auxiliary convention in New York City, where she will be pfesented as candidate for the office of vice chairman of the northwest dis trict. She left Tuesday by train. Sunday night, the department of Oregon will entertain in Mrs. Coyner's honor at a "round-up party" in the grand ballroom of the Commodore Hotel. Decora tions, food and program will be in the western style, and members of the hostess group will be in cowgirl outfits, complete with boots, spurs and sombreros. A social highlight of the con vention will be a fashion show Sunday afternoon in the main ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria. Five of the world's foremost fa shion marts, Macy's, Gimbel's, Sakks, Stern Brothers and John, Inc., will join forces to present a "world cavalcade of fashion," designed to be the most elabor ately complete production of its kind ever presented. En route home, Mrs. Coyner will visit in Washington, D. c, and in Waynesboro with cousins. In Iowa she, will visit with her son, David, and his wife. David has been discharged from the Air Force and expects to enter col lege in Iowa in September. Mrs. Coyner will return to Bend In about three weeks. VFW district U picnic will be held Sunday, Aug. 2-1. in the up per meadows of Shevlin park. Ac tivities wilt start at w a. m., ana a program of ceremonial dances will be presented at 11 o'clock by members of the new Warm Springs post. Picnickers are to take their own basket lunches and table service, and pop. ice cream and coffee will lie provid ed, according to the committee in charge. Degree of Honor will hold a picnic Tuesday, Aug. 26. at 6:30 p. m. in Pioneer park. Families are to bring their own picnic lunches and beverages, with enough food for one guest. Those who plan to attend are being ask ed to call 1023-J. not later than Tuesday morning. Simmers, in Camp Sherman. Mr. and Mrs. Edward McLennan of Bend were co-hosts, and their children, Janice and Jimmy, had charge of the guest book. Some 85 guests attended the par ty and extended felicitations to the McLennans. Wedding cake, ice cream and coffee were served from a table on the lawn. McLennan came to Central Ore gon in 1903 from Canada, and his wife is a native of Scotland. The family moved to Bend in 1922. Women of the Moose will spon sor the third in a series of public card parties Friday, Aug. 22, at 8 p. m. in Moose hall.
