Montana's state GOP Convention Tuesday night elected an "unin structed" eight-man delegation to me party's July 7 presidental nominating convention in Chicago. Seven of the delegates were avowed Taft .supporters, while one said he favors Eisenhower. That brought the United Press tabulation of delegates committed or publicly announced to '386 for Taft and 360 for Eisenhower. Montana Democrats chose a 20 man delegation having 12 votes. It will follow the administration's lead at the national convention. Washington Republicans elect 2-1 delegates Kriday and Saturday. A few months ago, Taft was favored to win a substantial majority ol the state's delegates. Since Eisenhower's victory in the primary in neighboring Oregon last week, however, the Eisenhow er forces have become optimistic about their chances of winning most of the Washington delegates. At tho same time, the Taft camp has become pessimistic. Maryland Republicans also choose 24 delegates at their state convention Saturday. Both the Eisenhower and Taft organizations expect to get some "second choice" support from delegates who will probably be pledged to Gov. Theo dore H. McKeldin on the first ballot. Taft leaves Wednesday night for South Dakota where he faces his last primary lest June 3. The Ohio senator and Eisenhower have been entered in a contest for 14 pledged delegates in the final primary in the Middle West, which has been Tart's strongest territory. . Both camps have much at stake in South Dakota in the two-man test of vote-pulling power. The results presumably will be pub licized while Eisenhower is making his homecoming speech at Abilene, Kan., on June 4. Among the Democratic- candi dates, Sen. Richard B. Russell of Georgia leaves Wednesday night to begin his second campaign in Florida. . 1 Russell defeated Sen. Estes Ke- fnuvcr of Tennessee in Florida's presidential primary "popularity contest May 7. They are matched again, however, in another primary next Tuesday, when Florida Demo crats elect 24 delegates to tho party s national convention. Foreign Aid Administrator W. Averell Ilarriman headed for St. Louis to begin a nationwide tour to press his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. At a news conference In Boston Tuesday, Harriman said he Is con fident or winning the nomination, and believes that he can defeat Eisenhower or any other Republi can nominee on the issues of "peace and war." He said he respects Eisenhower "as a friend" but believes that he has broader experience both in domestic and international affairs than the general. Workers Return DENVER, May 2t Hi Approx imately one-thlicl of the nation's 90,000 striking oil workers were back nt work Wednesday and a ranking union official said he hoped the rest will return to their jobs by the end of the week. "About one-third of the strik ing groups have gone back to work," said O. A, Knight, presi dent of the CIO Oil Workers In ternational, the largest of the co alition of 22 AFL, CIO and inde pendent unions involved in the 22-day-old walkout. He added that "most of these Include the small locals." : As the strike slowly drew to a close, a gasoline price war broke out at Topeka, Kans., Tuesday. Stations on the outskirts of the city sold regular gasoline for as low as 19.9 cents a gallon and ethyl was selling for 20.9 cents, while the dealers inside the city limits were charging 26.3 and 28.3 cents for tiie same grades. Medford Pickets Picket Pickets MEDKORD, Ore., May 21 HPi Pickets were picketing the pick ets at Kim's restaurant here Tues day. Waitresses who said they ob jected to union attempts at or ganization marched side by side with union pickets and carried signs in favor of Henry Fon, their employer. One waitress said the women were picketing the pickets on their own and that their employer had nothing to do with it. The union picket line has been in effect since May 2 and is against employes of the restaurant. A new plastic automobile body is now In commercial production In the United States. WSB Turns Down Union Request WASHINGTON, May-21 (Hi The Wuge Stabllizatiun'Board hag ruled that it lacks authority to order company wide bargaining in a labor-management dispute. The board voted 8 to 4 Tuesday, with labor members dissenting, to send a demand by the CIO United Autoworkers for a con tract covering 10 Borg-Warner Co. plants back to the parties for negotiation. Some 10,000 union members at the plants located in five states held a three-week strike last Oc tober to back their main demand for a "master contract" with Borg-Warner. The company re fused the demand, and insisted on plant-by-plant negotiations. The plants are located In Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Ten- Youth Mistaken For Prowler NEW YORK, May 21 (IB-Young Mike Brodei'ick couldn't sit down Wednesday because a clever neigh bor was afraid of robbers. Greenwood Phone 1279 mm BRINGS YOl Jury Finds Boy : Guilty of Murder EUGENE, May 21 (IB Eugene Harlan Belcher, 15, was t found guilty of first degree murder Tues day for. the slaying of Mary Ellen Campbell. 18-ycar-old partially-deaf girl, on April 4 near Cottage Grove. The circuit court jury, which de liberated four hours, recommended leniency, making a sentence of life imprisonment mandatory. During the six-day trial, young Belcher repudiated a confession in which he had said he killed the girl because his school friends had taunted him about the girl's pregnancy.
