Pfc.: George D, Howard of 225 Seventh street, Redmond, has been awarded the Bronze Star medal lor meritorious service in Korea, according to an army press release. Howard was a member of the medical battalion of the Third i Infantry Division,- before he was rotated to the United States: in March. The decoration was presented in recognition of f' his performance of duty from Aug. ax, iaai, to March l, laM. .'The Rainbow Singers will hold a regular practice tonight at 8 o'cloch, in the High School or chestra room. They made the trip with Dr. and Mrs. George Rose berry of Salem. Dr. Rosebery, dis trict superintendent, conducted the quarterly conference yesterday at the local church. The general con ference is held once every four years, with MeXiodists from all parts of the world attending. This year, there will be 800 official dele gates, and hundreds of missionaries and visitors. Marion Cady, manager of the Bend Chamber of Commerce, left today for Portland, where he will attend a meeting of the state high way commission tomorrow. He will also attend other meetings in' that area before returning to Bend the latter part of the week. Hamilton for violating probation on a for mer conviction of issuing bad checks. , , Tumalo Resident Dies on Saturday Helen Lively Windpm, 64, a long time resident of the' Tumalo com munity, died Saturday at a Port land hospital, following a short ill ness. She was a native of Chatta nooga, Tenn., and belonged, (to the Episcopal church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Redmond Community Church, with Rev. Rob ert Williams officiating. Qurial will be in the Gray Butte cemetery.' Mrs. Windom is survived by her husband, Harry E., and two bro thers, Jack Arnold of Chicago and Ernest Arnold of Chattanooga.- Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dallas, Port land, arrived today to attend the funeral. Bend Dri Receives Award The drill team of the Bend bethel of Jobs Daughters brought home a cup and a blue ribbon rrom me grand bethel session this past week end in Roseburg. The local girls placed first for floral drills in class B. The award was presented to Carol McCormack, who origi nated and directed the drill with out adult assistance.; --. Miss McCormack was also nam ed honorary representative for the state of Michigan, a courtesy which is conferred each year .at the grand session. Honored queens of differ ent bethels are selected to repre sent the various states. Mrs. Ford Hunnell, guardian of the local bethel, was installed as grand senior custodian, in the cere mony Saturday night. Another Cen tral Oregon resident, Orvel Berry of Prlneville, was installed as vice associate grand guardian. Grubb's court to pay a similar fine for his wife. Mrs. Livingston had been fined $5 for driving without an operator's license and her husband went into the court to pay the fine. After he hkd paid up, he went to a nearby cafe for a cup of coffee.. Just as he was leaving a state police of ficer didn't like the way he spun the wheels of the car. The officer went to Investigate and gave Liv ingston a -ticket for driving with out an operator's license. The Liv ingstons moved here recently from California to go into business and were still using their California drivers' permits. - Bend Boy Wins Chemistry Award The 1952 chemistry achieve ment award at LInfield College, McMlnnville, has been awarded to Drannan C. Hamby, son df Mr. and Mrs. W. V. "Jack" Hamby, according to word received here today from the college. Hamby Is a freshman at Linfleld, majoring in chemistry. The award is a handbook of chemistry written by Dr. Norbert A. Lange, lecturer in chemistry at Cleveland College of Western Reserve. It is given annually to a member of the freshman chem istry class on a basis of scholas tic excellence. . Hospital News Emily P. Nelson Dies at Age 68 Emily Pearle Nelson, a new comer to Bend from Mount Ster ling, 111., died Sunday morning at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Gerrett S. Armstrong, at 1637 W. Fourth street. She was 68. Mrs. Nelson had been ill only a few days. She leaves her husband, Carl; a son, John F., Chicago; a sister, Marie Watkins, Albuquer que, N.M., and a brother, Losell Brockman, Mt. Sterling. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m.' from the Nis-wonger-Winslow chapel, with Rev, W. H. Hart officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Secretary Eden Asks Information LONDON, April 21 (IrT-Forelgn Secretary Anthony Eden announc ed Monday that he is asking the Chinese Communist government for full information about 55 West ern citizens, including 42 Ameri cans, reported in jail in Red China: Eden said In Commons llmt he has instructed the British charge d'affairs in Peiping to deliver a note to the Communists asking details on the charges against the Westerners, the sentences imposed on them, if any, and their where abouts and welfare. Eden said the Chinese are re ported to have jailed five Canadi ans, five Britons or citizens of British colonies and three Austral ians. : In addition to the 42 Americans jailed, he said, 20 Americans are held under house arrest.
