The 7th division seized the abandoned, bombed-out border city of Hyesanjin without oppo sition and jubilantly widened its hold on the south bank of the Yalu river directly opposite com munist Manchuria. But however great the morale factor, in the swift dash of the 7th, the fact remained that the communists still hold all but a few miles of the twisting Yalu and Tumen river lines which sep arate the 700-mile North Korea frontier from China and Sibera. A spokesman for Gen. Doug las MacArthur said the Chinese communists have completed a new defense line on the ap proaches to Sinulju, temporary capitaV of the Korean reds, and the Yalu river power plant in northwest Korea. He predicted the Chinese would make a strong stand there. He said they also might launch a new offensive from the line. Fifth air force fighters-bombers flew 40 flights against com munist troops massing behind the new defenses and supply convoys moving down from the Manchur ian frontier. They straffed, bomb ed, rocketed and dropped flaming jelled gasoline on gun emplace ments, entrenched buildings and convoys all along the freezing front. Jet fighters destroyed 39 build ings and three vehicles in one town alone Yongpo, six miles west of Unsan. American 24th division patrols probing the western end of the line came under machine-gun fire. On ' the west-central front, how ever, South Korean troops ad vanced up to seven miles without opposition behind communist forces withdrawing to the new defense line. v The only United Nations col umn reporting even feeble enemy opposition in northeast Korea was the capitol division.
