LET WALTER PAY IT Visitors at the state fair this year learned about their state government and especially about one of their state officials from a printed statement bearing a reproduction of an Ore gon check for nearly two million dollars signed by Walter J. 1'earson and giving a quick outline of the duties of his duties as state treasurer. The statement, 10,000 of which were print ed by the state printing office, told the people that : "Your state treasurer is your representative in disbursing all funds authorized by law, designating depositories for safe keeping of state funds, collecting interest earned by the state, compiling statistics of indebtedness of the state and its subdi visions, enforcing the inheritance and gift tax laws and col lecting the taxes due therefrom". It mentioned also the treasurer's membership on the board of control, state bond commission, state reclamation board, state printing board, mentioned that suggestions to the treas urer would be welcomed and extended an invitation to come up and see him some time. While not so fortunate as to be handed a printed copy of "The Finances of the State of Oregon", as the statement was titled, we feel free to make a recommendation, namely, that the treasurer refrain from attempting to promote his personal political interests at state expense. That, apparently, was in tended for, in spite of the statement's closing line, "Compli ments of Walter J. Pearson, state treasurer", a printing bill for the job in the amount of $160.83 was presented to the state. It was reassuring to observe in yesterday's news that Governor McKay, also a member of the board of control, did not consider this a proper item of state expense and to have the word from the office of Secretary of state N'ewbry, the third member, that he was not expected to approve the bill either. Perhaps the Pearson promotion will be with Mr. Pearson's compliments after all.
