PAGE EIGHT THE BEND BULLETIN, BEND,- OREGON TUESDAY, JUNE 21 , 1949 Milton Babich Gets Life Term On Murder Count Milwaukee, June 21 ttPi Milton Babich, 19, began serving a life sentence today for murdering Patricia Birmingham, 16, to con ceal that he made hr sister, Kathleen, 18, pregnant out of wedlock. Babich, a handsome former high school honor student, was raced to the Wisconsin state pris on at Waupun early today, less than three hours after a jury of 10 men and two women round him guilty of first degree murder. The slight olive-skinned youth stood rigid and grim last night as Judge Herbert J. stenes nanaea him the mandatory sentence re quired by the conviction life lm- prisonment. He turned pale when the conviction was announced but won back composure quickly. The judge added the words "at hard labor" to make his sentence stiffer. Wisconsin has no death penal ty. Appeal Planned With time off for good behav ior, Babich will be eligible for parole In 11 years. His attorneys said they would ask for a new trial. Failing in that, they will appeal. In what was believed to be a record time of one hour and 19 minutes, the jury found Babich guilty of shooting Patricia to death in his family's car last Feb. 10 in a premeditated attempt to stop her "tattling" about the fact that Kathleen was carrying his baby without mariage. Babich and Kathleen eloped on March 18, two days before coast guardsmen found Patricia's body where he had dumped it in the Milwaukee river, weighting It down with a 38-pound concrete block. Kathleen turned a violet scar let and burst into, hysterical sobs as the verdict was announced. She expects to bear her baby-next month. ' Mother Unforgiving "Oh, what lies!" she shouted, and then sobbed, "Lies, lies, lies!" But her mother, Mrs. Katharine Birmingham, was unforgiving. "He got what was coming to him," she said. The trial's ending precipitated an open break between Kathleen and her family. As- the verdict was read, Ba bich's family burst into weeping, then crowded around Kathleen to comfort her where she sat next to Babtch's older brother, Victor. When her mother came to em brace her, Kathleen brushed her away without a word and then left the courtroom with her in laws, apparently intending to live with them until the day Babich can return to her and their baby.
