Teams to Get
Test of Strength
The Bend Lava Boars will
travel to Redmond this evening
for a "king's X" game that may
well set up a favorite for district
honors for this season. .
Although the Bears defeated
Panthers 13 to 7 in a 10-minute
quarter at the hoop jamboree
early this month, most fans be
lieve the Redmond squad's vete
ran lineup will give the Bend five
.Vtough time tonight.
The game will be the final
chance for local fans to see the
Bears In action until January 11,
when the Redmond team- will
come to Bend for a district game,
ftn the meantime, the Bend squad
CTwIll play a number of games on
IHC lunu.
To Play Roseburg
On December 28 a game is
scheduled with Jack Newby's
Roseburg team at Roseburg. On
December 29 and 30, Russ Ache
son will invade his old home
school territory in the Coos Bay
country for games with Marsh
field. On January 4, the Bears
will open their Big Six schedule
at Corvallls.
The Redmond team this year
combines the speed of Verl Ham
mack, Clayton Bliss and Ed Kribs
with the height of Ken Falrchlld
and Jim Riggs. The team's
chances for district honors were
greatly bolstered by the return
qf Riggs, who did not turn out
for football and had not been ex
pected to turn out for basketball.
In their early games, the Bears
have appeared strong with Larry
Standlfer and Doug Hogland con
trolling both backboards. . The
team's fast break offense has
clicked at times and set plays
have moved through both zone
and man-to-man defenses. De
fensively, the team appears much
stronger than in former years.

ing attendance and poor officiat
ing today concerned .mid-western
basketball coaches visiting the
the east as they pulled no punches
against the ills currently affect
ing college basketball. -
Hu.sky Jack Gardner of Kansas
State and lean Bruce Drake of
Oklahoma took a healthy swipe
at those items. And then they
added that perhaps basketball is
scheduling too many games per
team; that television Is becoming
an Increasing problem and that
maybe they and othef coaches
are teaching the wrong- type
game.
Gardner, whose team just com
pleted a cross-country jaunt, was
particularly outspoken. Comment
ing on plans everywhere to build
larger field houses, he said:
"We may have seen our hey
day as far as crowds are concern
ed. The people just don't have the
money and aren't spending."
Gardner also was bitter about
officiating generally.
"It's been pretty poor and the
only answer Is that we need
younger men to handle our
games; men just out of school
who recognize contact."
One of the "two big" spots, ac
cording to the Kansas State
coach, was tho San Francisco
Cow palace.
"It's so big there that it clouds
up and rains inside," he chuckled,
"joe DIMagglo is about the only
guy who could throw a baseball
up to the roof."
Having played across the na
tion, Gardner had things to say
which might not please the fans
in St. Louis. He Insisted that San
Francisco and Santa Clara were
as good as highly-touted St. Louis
and that Ed McCauley, star of the
St. Louisans, couldn't "carry the
shoes" of Kentucky s Alex Groza
Drake, the Oklahoma pilot, em

"Personally, I don't believe that
