Mr. and Mrs. Byron A. Carlson

and Brenda, are to leave tonight
for their home in Chappaqua,
near New York City, after visit
ing in Bend several days with the

geles, where Dietsch is an instruc
tor in Roosevelt high school.
They left at noon for the John
Day area, on a fossil-collecting
trip.

PLEADS GUILTY
Ivon Bench, 18, Bend, pleaded
guilty to the charge of larceny
yesterday and was sentenced to
two years in the state peniten
tiary. He appeared before Cir
cuit Judge Ralph S. Hamilton.
Bench had waived indictment by
a grand Jury. ,

and corporation excise taxes be

the levy is determined, an analy
sis of a supreme court ruling
showed today. i
Chief Justice George Kossman
of the Oregon supreme court
made this ' point in his opinion
ruling that income taxes can oe
applied only to reduce property
taxes.
The question of whether or not
the six per cent limitation applies
to income and corporate excise
taxes has been a long-standing
controversy that has plagued
legislators, tax officials and tax
payers. This is the first time
it has been definitely settled by
the high court. .The1 limitation
is in an amendment tOrtha- state
constitution adopted in 1916. It
limits a tax levy to not more
than six per' cent over the amount
of taxes levied in anyone of three
preceding years.

Crash of B-29
Rapid City. S. D., Aug. 21 tin
Air force officers today investi
gated the crash of a B-29 which
ploughed into the ground on a
take off and killed its 17 crew
members and passengers.
The huge ship crashed and
burned 500 yards from the end of
