Washington ii The Interior department is proud of Its veter ans who came back to make good within the department. . For instance, there's Tom Atke son, an assistant biologist for the fish and wildlife service down in Decatur, Ga. Atkeson makes speeches and shows wildlife films to sportsmen's groups In the area along with his other duties. Yet this young veteran lost the sight of both eyes and boths his hands in a land mine explosion in the European theater. Another young veteran, Wayne Garrett of Altus, Okla., has made a unique record at Interior. He started out in the bureau of recla mation as an engineering aide with a $l,440 a-year salary. Garrett served as a marine pi lot (luring the war. When he re turned to the bureau it needed a man to fly its plane in the west. Garrett got the job and a Jump In salary to $5,905.20 a year. Atkeson and Garrett are just two examples of 60 per cent of the Interior veterans who are holding better jobs in the department than they had when they went Into the service. 1947 Freshman Nervous But A Solid Citizen New Orleans Ul'i Today's col lege freshman may drink more coffee than his dad did. And he may be a little more nervous than the first-year student of a decade ago. But I ho freshman of today Is in no danger of becoming a physi cal wreck or psychoneurotic than his grandad was. Dr. Lloyd J. Kuhn, director of Indent health at Tulnne Univer sity, has studied the life and hab its of the young men. He has de cided they are solid citizens. Kuhn says the chief difference between the freshman of today and 20 years ago Is that "they are coming to school a little younger and slimmer," and possibly a bit more nervous.
