Bend's defeat aooeared large ly due to the inability of the fatieued Bears to hit the basket, nnri lhev missed plenty of easy ones that would have changed the game into a great fourth-quarter battle. The Spartans, paced by two eagle-eyed -guards, Stevens and Osborne, took a 14 to 5 lead over the Bears in the first quarter ana . were never headed. At halttlme, the CorvalJis team was out ahead 33 to 13, and at the end of the third quarter the Spartans were stiU going strong, holding a ai to 27 lead. The Bears stanea mov ing in the final period, but time was just too short to pare down the lead to any great extent. Use Zone Defense The Bears used a zone defense against the Spartans, but were unable to stop Osborne and Stev ens, who lobbed in shot after shot, in howitzer fashion, over the de fenders' heads. Osborne was high point man for the evening, with a total ol is points to nis credit. Sheffold was high for Bend with ten points, despite considerable difficulty in the first half in con necting with the basket. He made practically all his points in the K cond half. , The trans-mountain trip was a hard one on the Bears, largely due to travel difficulties. They were hours late in reaching Albany for their first contest, arriving in time to gulp a hurried meal before going on the floor. - On their re turn trip, they did not get into Bend until 4 a.m. Sunday morning althought they started home shortly after the game was over. Tonight, the Bears are to get a much needed rest, then on Tues day night will swing back into practice for two home games here Friday and Saturday nights against No-Name league teams. Salem will be here Friday night, and Albany will provide the op position Saturday night. '. v Lineups Listed . Bend (43) (63) CorvaUjs Hawes (8)' F (2) Locey Rasmussen (9) F..
